Book excerpt: Fretting fatigue damage is characterized by the nucleation of cracks very early in the life of a component along a critical plane at an oblique angle to the contact surface. The number of cycles to fretting fatigue crack nucleation as well as the orientation of the initial crack critical plane is strongly influenced by the large stress and strain gradients that occur within a small volume near the fretting contact. Therefore, it is necessary to average the stresses and strains along a critical plane within a fretting fatigue process volume (FFPV) to obtain more reliable crack nucleation predictions. An approach for computing damage in a FFPV using finite element analysis is presented. The life and crack angle prediction is consistent with experimental observations of fretting fatigue tests on PH 13-8 Mo stainless steel. This averaging method allows for the introduction of a length scale for crack nucleation prediction.

Book excerpt: Many factors, such as the amplitude of the cyclic load, the relative rigidity of components and the frictional condition, play important roles in the fretting fatigue process. This study has focused on the local singular stress field at the fatigue crack tip or at the contact edge where the initial crack occurs, based on the numerical analysis results with the use of finite element method (FEM) program ABAQUS. It is proposed that all the effect of test conditions can be contained by the local stress field, which would dominate the fatigue crack initiation and propagation. By comparing with the experimental results, it was found that the initial fatigue crack should occur at the point of maximum shear stress range near the contact edge, and would propagate in the direction of maximum tangential stress range. An analytical simulation of fretting fatigue crack propagation has been carried out. It was found that a fatigue crack was always under the mixed mode conditions, the fracture path could be estimated by the maximum tangential stress theory (???max), and the propagation curve could be characterized by the stress intensity factor range in this direction ( ?K??max).

Book excerpt: A fracture mechanics-based approach which uses Mode I Stress Intensity Factor (SIFs) to estimate the influence of fretting fatigue loads (which can consist of normal and shear contact loads, as well as bulk or far-field loads) has been proposed by Rooke and Jones ("Stress Intensity Factors in Fretting Fatigue," Journal of Strain Analysis, Vol. 14, No. 1, 1979, pp. 1-6), who proposed a cracking scenario in which a single edge crack propagates to failure under the influence of the contact and bulk stress damage drivers. A major shortcoming of this approach is that the underlying analytical method and closed form integral equations assume that the single edge crack propagates into a semi-infinite domain or half-space. Significant differences in the stress states for finite width domains have been postulated by Fellows et al. ("Contact Stresses in a Moderately Then Strip (with Particular Reference to Fretting Experiments," Wear, Vol. 185, 1995, pp. 235-238) among others. SIFs can be roughly correlated with stress; therefore variations in the stress states normally result in variations in the SIFs. Variations in the SIFs due to shear and normal contact loads, and due to finite width effects are quantitatively evaluated with the finite element method (FEM). Results with the finite element approach are compared to those using the Rooke and Jones method, as well as other results from the open literature.

The cracks which grow may either originate from some pre-existing macroscopic defect, or, if the component is of high integrity but highly stressed, a region of localized stress concentration. In turn, such concentrators may be caused by some minute defect, such as a tiny inclusion, or inadvertent machining damage. Another source of surface damage which may exist between notionally 'bonded' components is associated with minute relative motion along the interface, brought about usually be cyclic tangential loading. Such fretting damage is quite insidious, and may lead to many kinds of problems such as wear, but it is its influence on the promotion of embryo cracks with which we are concerned here. When the presence of fretting is associated with decreased fatigue performance the effect is known as fretting fatigue. Fretting fatigue is a subject drawing equally on materials science and applied mechanics, but it is the intention in this book to concentrate attention entirely on the latter aspects, in a search for the quantification of the influence of fretting on both crack nucleation and propagation. There have been very few previous texts in this area, and the present volume seeks to cover five principal areas; (a) The modelling of contact problems including partial slip under tangentialloading, which produces the surface damage. (b) The modelling of short cracks by rigorous methods which deal effectively with steep stress gradients, kinking and closure. (c) The experimental simulation of fretting fatigue.

Book excerpt: The temperature field in the contact zone has a significant effect on the material microstructure, its properties, the oxidation process, and the thermal contact stresses. To standardize fretting fatigue tests, one has to be able to predict and control the contact temperature. Since direct temperature measurement is practically impossible, analytical models are required to estimate the friction-induced temperatures rise under fretting conditions. The main objective of the present work is to model the thermal constriction phenomenon in fretting fatigue and wear processes, considering the roughness and waviness of contacting surfaces. These asperity-scale models can be combined with large scale analyses, e.g. finite element method, to account for the thermal characteristics of the whole tribo-system, its boundary conditions, as well as the spatial variation in the slip amplitude and coefficient of friction over the interface. The debatable question on whether the contact temperature in fretting fatigue is significant is addressed, considering a wide range of materials and applied loads. The analysis showed that the randomness of the contact size may substantially increase the micro-constriction impedance of the fretting interface. The paper is concluded with recommendations for future work to experimentally validate these models, and to examine the effect of the spatial maldistribution of the micro-contacts, and the effect of surface oxide on the contact temperature prediction.

Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work.
