Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes are one of the newest materials to be discovered, being barely 20 years old. They are also the most promising one, with one particular sample of multi-walled nanotube attaining a tensile strength of 63GPa, and with carbon nanotubes in general having a specific strength of up to 48000kNm/kg: effectively a direct exploitation of the covalent sp2 bonding between carbon atoms. Plastic deformation begins at about 5% strain. The nanotubes can be produced in lengths of up to 550mm, and thicknesses as small as 4.3Å; making them perfect reinforcement fibres for composites. They also have many other properties which may be useful in electronics, gas storage, etc. The present compilation focuses on the various characteristic types of defect which are found in carbon nanotubes, plus the relatively limited number of diffusion studies which have been performed. The 418 entries cover the period from 1994 to 2014. Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNT) are being used extensively as reinforcing materials at nanoscale in developing new nanocomposites, because of their excellent mechanical properties. Incorporating CNTs in polymer matrices can potentially enhance the stiffness and strength of composites significantly when compared to those reinforced with conventional carbon fibers. However, retaining these outstanding properties at macro-scale poses a considerable challenge. To discover the ways for achieving this entails extensive experimental and simulation studies. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been proved to be an excellent approach in characterizing nanocomposites. Nevertheless, MD is limited to nanoscale due to its extra-ordinary computational costs, which promoted the development and usage of alternate approaches for characterizing CNT reinforced composites at microscale. In this research one of these alternative approaches, the continuum mechanics approach using the finite element method, is employed to estimate the effective modulus of CNT reinforced composites and was successfully validated using other analytical (rule of mixtures) and MD methods. Large-scale models were developed, simulating CNTs using pipe elements for the first time. Results from these models reveal that there exists a limiting value for the length of long CNT, for effective load transfer. It was also observed that composites reinforced with long CNTs yield very high effective modulus compared to those with short CNTs. These results are found to be in good agreement with those obtained using MD and multi-scale constitutive modeling approaches.

Book excerpt: The mechanical and electrical properties of carbon nanotube composites are attractive for a number of applications. The final properties depend on the quality of the feed stock, the amount of material used, and methods for de-aggregating and dispersing the nanotubes. Here, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, RAMAN spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and permittivity measurements are used to discern between three commercially available multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Nanocyl 7000, Cheap Tubes, and a sample of acid functionalized multi-walled nanotubes), and their epoxy composites. The RAMAN and thermogravimetric analysis data indicated that the Nanocyl had the most defects and impurities, however, the permittivity measurements and scanning electron microscopy data indicated that the Nanocyl nanotubes were well distributed in the matrix. The most important factors for dispersion and high permittivity appear to be the ability to de-aggregate the nanotubes, which is enabled by the short length, and a small diameter. The small diameter results in an overall longer length of carbon nanotube in the composite compared to an equal mass of larger diameter nanotubes.

Book excerpt: This research demonstrates the techniques to potentially use continuous carbon nanotube (CNT) yarns to make high mechanical performance composites at scale for use in aerospace applications. CNT yarns are a way to convert carbon nanotubes into engineering scale materials. Fully CNT reinforced composites were manufactured using a filament winding process and aerospace grade resin systems. Manufacturing techniques were evaluated, including stretching, compression, resin impregnation, and flow control. Continuous CNT yarns were made into sizable unidirectional, 0°/90°, and quasi-isotropic composite laminates. The resultant composite panels achieved mechanical properties that exceed the current state of the art carbon fiber composites such as IM7/8552 CFRP.

Book excerpt: Carbon-Nanotube-Reinforced-Polymer-Composite (CNRPC) materials have generated widespread interest over the last several years in practical engineering applications, such as aeronautical and aerospace engineering structures. However, studies still need to be carried out to characterize their mechanical properties, especially the dynamic properties, and the effects of defects on the mechanical properties. Experimental investigations intended for this purpose have limitations and, in most cases, reliable cost-effective experimental work could not be carried out. Computational modelling and simulation encompassing multiscale material behavior provide an alternate approach in this regard to characterize the material behavior. A probabilistic approach serves as a suitable approach to characterize the effects of material and structural defects. The present thesis reports the development of a computational framework of the Representative Volume Element (RVE) of a CNRPC material model to determine its static and dynamic responses, and also for the evaluation of its static and dynamic reliabilities based on a probabilistic characterization approach. A 3D multiscale finite element model of the RVE of the nanocomposite material consisting of a polymer matrix, a Single-Walled-Carbon-Nanotube (SWCN) and an interface region has been constructed for this purpose. The multiscale modeling is performed in terms of using different theories and corresponding strain energies to model the individual parts of the RVE of the CNRPC material. The macroscale continuum mechanics is used for the polymer matrix, the mesoscale mechanics is used for the interface region, and the nanoscale-level atomistic mechanics is used for the SWCN. The polymer matrix is modeled using the Mooney-Rivlin strain energy function to calculate its non-linear response, while the interface region is modeled via the van der Waals links. The SWCN is first modeled as a space frame structure by using the Morse potential, and then as a thin shell based on a suitable shell theory. For this purpose, the suitability and the accuracy of popular shell theories for use in the multiscale model of the RVE are assessed.

In each case, the relationships between the processing parameters and microstructure of obtained nanocomposites were described. The synergistic effect of hybrid nanofillers was also explored in nanocomposites with carbon and halloysite nanotubes. The effect of carbon nanotubes on the wear behavior of nanocomposites based on epoxy resin was investigated as well. The original results on the synthesis and characterization of composite shear thickening fluids containing carbon nanofillers are presented. The addition of the CNTs modified the impact absorption ability of such fluids. The presented Special Issue results also proved that CNTs can be used to obtain more resistant and durable cement-based composites.
