Book CRC Handbook of Viruses Infecting Legumes

Download or read book CRC Handbook of Viruses Infecting Legumes written by John R. Edwardson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interesting handbook discusses 145 plant viruses in 27 groups and 31 unclassified viruses in naturally infected legumes. The viruses were observed in field infections of 281 species in 64 genera of the Leguminosae. The book presents information regarding resistance sources and resistance-breeding, vectors, seed transmission, and host ranges. Measurements of virus properties are organized in tabular form for particle dimensions, serological relationships, nucleic acid percentages, sedimentation coefficients of particles and nucleic acids, molecular weights of nucleic acids and coat proteins, optical density, and buoyant density. Handbook of Viruses Infecting Legumes is unique in that it relates inclusion cytology to plant virus detection, identification, and classification. Light and electron micrographs illustrate morphology, location, and staining reactions of inclusions. Of the 27 groups that contain viruses infecting legumes in nature, inclusions are diagnostic at the group level in 15 of these groups. Plant breeders, diagnosticians, plant virologists, and students of plant virology will find this an indispensable guide to legume viruses.

Swaminathan Research Foundation: “The book provides remedies to the common maladies relating to quality and safety of dietary material. Professor Narayanasamy has compiled and presented with great clarity the latest information on all aspects relating to immunology in plant health and food safety. We owe Professor Narayanasamy a deep debt of gratitude for this labor of love in the cause of improving food and feed quality and safety.” Immunology in Plant Health and Its Impact on Food Safety suggests cost-effective, simple, and sensitive immunological techniques to assess plant health and food safety for the production of desirable foods, feeds, and timbers. This book explores the structure and biochemical constituents of healthy plants and the abiotic and biotic stresses that can cause a marked reduction in quantity and quality of agricultural produce. Researchers, faculty members, and graduate scholars in plant pathology, microbiology, biochemistry, environmental sciences, and food technology will find this text useful for producing healthy plants while maintaining a pollution-free environment. In Immunology in Plant Health and Its Impact on Food Safety, methods to develop stress-resistant cultivars are discussed to enable you to select the most suitable strategies for maintaining production and quality without the use of chemicals. This valuable resource provides detailed instructions for employing immunoassays that are rapid, reproducible, and amenable for large-scale application in place of cumbersome and expensive methods currently in use. With this important tool, you will be able to plan and develop programs to obtain agricultural produce of high quality acceptable for human and animal consumption. With Immunology in Plant Health and Its Impact on Food Safety, you’ll learn more about: agrosystems immunological reactions preparations of antisera immunodetection techniques plant-stress interactions genetic manipulations disease resistance and the production of disease-free plants mycotoxins chemical residues This essential guide provides you with access to a wide spectrum of information never before encompassed in a single book, saving you time and energy. Figures, photographs, and tables with appropriate data supply visual and factual support for the points discussed in the text. Immunology in Plant Health and Its Impact on Food Safety includes a large number of citations (over 1000) for further research and development in your chosen field of study.

Book Plant Diseases and Vectors Ecology and Epidemiology

Download or read book Plant Diseases and Vectors Ecology and Epidemiology written by Karl Maramorosch and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plant Diseases and Vectors: Ecology and Epidemiology is the fourth in a five-volume series of books on vectors of plant disease agents. It is comprised of 10 chapters representing the expertise of 13 outstanding scientists from a total of seven different countries. This book begins with a discussion on the ecological involvement of wild plants in plant virus pathosystems. This is followed by the principles and applications of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in diagnosing plant viruses and monitoring their movement in the environment. The next two chapters detail the epidemiologies of diseases caused by leafhopper-borne viruses, mollicutes, and rickettsia-like organisms. This book also covers the developments in understanding the importance of helper agents to the transmission ecologies of many aphid-borne plant viruses. It also encompasses the factors that can contribute to the epidemiology and control of a disease affecting a major agricultural crop of the world. A vector of plant viruses not covered in earlier volumes of the series (the host plant, itself) and the man-made epidemiological hazards in major crops of developing countries are also described. This volume will broaden the knowledge of transmission ecology and disease epidemiology, not only by serving as a valuable supplemental textbook, reference work, and bibliographical source, but also by catalyzing novel syntheses of thinking and stimulating further research in the area.

Book Diagnosis of Plant Virus Diseases

Download or read book Diagnosis of Plant Virus Diseases written by R. E. F. Matthews and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagnosis of Plant Virus Diseases presents a comprehensive summary of methods currently available for the diagnosis of plant diseases caused by viruses and viroids. Up-to-date literature references are provided, brief accounts of the basis for particular methods are included, and detailed protocols are presented. Procedures discussed include the use of host plants, electron microscopy of in vitro preparations, serological procedures (especially forms of ELISA, monoclonal antibodies, serological specific electron microscopy, and immunoblotting), and nucleic acid hybridization procedures. Strategies are outlined for implicating virus-like pathogens as causes of diseases of unknown etiology, and problems involved in identifying complexes of transmission-dependent and helper viruses are discussed. The book will be extremely useful for phytopathologists, plant virologists, and research students and workers in plant virology laboratories and diagnostic plant pathology laboratories.

Download or read book The Viruses written by Heinz Fraenkel-Conrat and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past two decades, virus taxonomy has advanced to the point where most viruses can be classified as belonging to families, genera, or groups of related viruses. Virus classification is primarily based on chem ical and physical similarities, such as the size and shape of the virion, the nature of the genomic nucleic acid, the number and function of com ponent proteins, the presence of lipids and of additional structural fea tures, such as envelopes, and serological interrelationships. The families, genera, or groups of viruses that have been defined on the basis of such criteria by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) will be described in some detail in this catalogue and illustrated by elec tron micrographs. In my present attempt to list most if not all well es tablished and studied viruses in alphabetical order, I have largely confined myself to identifying them only in such taxonomic terms, generally without quoting specific data reported for individual viruses. If the latter data do not at times agree closely with those given for the taxon or group, it is difficult to decide to what extent this is attributable to misclassi fication due to insufficient data and errors in the analytical procedures and descriptions, or to what extent this is an expression of Nature's free dom of choice and abhorrence of restrictive classifications.
