Download or read book The Neurospora Compendium written by David D. Perkins and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2000-10-11 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fungi have been major players in the molecular revolution that has transformed biology. Because they can be manipulated as microorganisms, yeast and Neurospora provide information that is difficult to acquire with plants and animals, and experimental findings with fungi often throw light on corresponding processes in plants and animals. The filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa has become a valuable model organism because of its favorable features for genetic analysis and because of the vast store of information that has been acquired during 75 years of research. This compendium provides researchers and students with a concise account of current knowledge about the genes and genome of Neurospora, setting the stage for research that will follow completion of the genome sequence. This book, which is fully documented and abundantly illustrated, will be an indispensable tool in any laboratory that uses fungi for research in molecular genetics, classical genetics, developmental genetics, or cell biology. - Molecular, genetic, and phenotypic information for over 1000 nuclear genes - Genetic maps - Linkage group assignments for 1000 loci - 2300 references, 68 figures - Guide to electronic and other sources of information - Summary information on the mitochondrial genome - cDNAs identified from different stages of life - Classical, cytogenetic, and molecular data, anticipating completion of the genome sequence

Download or read book Photomorphogenesis in Plants and Bacteria written by Eberhard Schäfer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-11 with total page 695 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique resource reviews progress made by scientists researching into how ambient changes in the wavelength, intensity, direction and duration of light environment affect plant growth and development. It explains how combinations of new research with classical photobiology and physiology have made it feasible to interpret intriguing light dependent phenomena such as phototropism, determination of flowering time, shade avoidance etc. at molecular level. Written by over 20 leading experts in the field the book covers major breakthroughs achieved in the last decade. It is generously referenced with more than 2389 bibliographic citations.

Download or read book Photoreceptors and Light Signalling written by Alfred Batschauer and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers comprehensive coverage of the most important areas in photoreceptors and light signalling. Photoreceptors enable most species to sense not only the presence of light but also the information, such as irradiance, colour or spectral distribution, direction and polarization of light. They are vital, therefore, in providing organisms with energy and information about their surroundings, such as day and night cycles. This book covers the range of photoreceptors that have been discovered to date and the broad range of methods used when researching how they operate, including: action spectroscopy; methods for protein purification; the whole range of molecular biological and genetic methods; and numerous spectroscopic methods, from absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy to X-ray diffraction, used for solving the structure of photoreceptors. Written by leading experts in the field, Photoreceptors and Light Signalling provides the reader with the most recent results and research. This book will be valued by a wide-range of readers, including students of photochemistry, photobiology, biology, chemistry and physics and other professionals in academia.

Download or read book The Gene written by Hans-Jörg Rheinberger and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-01-26 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few concepts played a more important role in twentieth-century life sciences than that of the gene. Yet at this moment, the field of genetics is undergoing radical conceptual transformation, and some scientists are questioning the very usefulness of the concept of the gene, arguing instead for more systemic perspectives. The time could not be better, therefore, for Hans-Jörg Rheinberger and Staffan Müller-Wille's magisterial history of the concept of the gene. Though the gene has long been the central organizing theme of biology, both conceptually and as an object of study, Rheinberger and Müller-Wille conclude that we have never even had a universally accepted, stable definition of it. Rather, the concept has been in continual flux—a state that, they contend, is typical of historically important and productive scientific concepts. It is that very openness to change and manipulation, the authors argue, that made it so useful: its very mutability enabled it to be useful while the technologies and approaches used to study and theorize about it changed dramatically.
