Book Character and the Supernatural in Shakespeare and Achebe

Download or read book Character and the Supernatural in Shakespeare and Achebe written by Kenneth Usongo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through mainly a New Historicist critical approach, this book explores how Shakespeare and Achebe employ supernatural devices such as prophecies, dreams, gods/goddesses, beliefs, and divinations to create complex characters. Even though these features indicate the preponderance of the belief in the supernatural by some people of the Elizabethan, Jacobean, and traditional Igbo societies, Shakespeare and Achebe primarily use the supernatural to represent the states of mind of their protagonists. Both writers appropriate supernatural features to mirror tragic flaws such as ambition, arrogance, impulsiveness, and fear that contribute to the downfall of Macbeth, Lear, Okonkwo, and Ezeulu. We relate to some of these characters because they project our inner minds, principal drives that may be hidden within us. Therefore, Shakespeare and Achebe’s preoccupation with the supernatural adds subtlety to their characterization and enhances their readability by situating their art beyond time, place, or particularity.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2013 in the subject English - History of Literature, Eras, grade: 80.00, Memorial University of Newfoundland, course: English 3200, language: English, abstract: Witchcraft and the supernatural has been a prevalent theme throughout theatre history, having many plays involving issues of witches, wizards, magic, ghosts, and other mysticisms. The world's most famous playwright, William Shakespeare, who wrote during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, was definitely no stranger to otherworldly premises. The ghost of the old king in Hamlet and the Weird Sisters in Macbeth are central to the plays' plots, they are a major force in determining the two heroes' actions, form the plays' opening scenes, and they are an important element in establishing the plays' atmosphere.

Book Dystopia in Arabic Speculative Fiction

Download or read book Dystopia in Arabic Speculative Fiction written by Wessam Elmeligi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dystopia in Arabic Speculative Fiction: A Poetics of Distress unpacks the nuanced Arabic contribution to speculative fiction. Part of a larger project by Elmeligi to formulate a poetics of literary theory to read Arabic literature, this book examines Arabic dystopian fiction from the lens of social causes of psychological distress. The selected novels combine works by authors already established in studies by Western scholars and many that have not been translated before or have not received enough scholarly attention, yet. The novels represent an array of Arab countries, including Algerian, Egyptian, Jordanian, Kuwaiti, Mauritanian, Syrian, and Tunisian authors. It also highlights the contribution of women authors to Arabic speculative fiction. This book enriches the conversation about what is quite possibly a significant speculative fiction turn in the Arabic novel, as well as provides a new theoretical approach to read such complex and innovative literature.

Book Contemporary Pakistani Speculative Fiction and the Global Imaginary

Download or read book Contemporary Pakistani Speculative Fiction and the Global Imaginary written by Shazia Sadaf and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-09-26 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the first book-length study of emergent Pakistani speculative fiction written in English, this critical work explores the ways in which contemporary Pakistani authors extend the genre in new directions by challenging the cognitive majoritarianism (usually Western) in this field. Responding to the recent Afro science fiction movement that has spurred non-Western writers to seek a democratization of the broader genre of speculative fiction, Pakistani writers have incorporated elements from djinn mythology, Qur'anic eschatology, "Desi" (South Asian) traditions, local folklore, and Islamic feminisms in their narratives to encourage familiarity with alternative world views. In five chapters, this book analyzes fiction by several established Pakistani authors as well as emerging writers to highlight the literary value of these contemporary works in reconciling competing cognitive approaches, blurring the dividing line between "possibilities" and "impossibilities" in envisioning humanity’s collective future, and anticipating the future of human rights in these envisioned worlds.

Book The Supernatural in Shakespeare s Plays Hamlet and Macbeth

Download or read book The Supernatural in Shakespeare s Plays Hamlet and Macbeth written by and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-08-24 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Bonn, language: English, abstract: Stories with supernatural elements like ghosts and witches existed before the coming of Christianity. Folkloric tales, vernacular beliefs and legends were at the roots of such stories. Ghosts and witches fascinated and at the same time scared many people around the world. During Shakespearean times, people believed in the idea of good and evil and were very superstition. The idea of the afterlife was also very popular. The unknown scared but at the same time amused many people; therefore, many plays feature supernatural elements in them. William Shakespeare, who wrote his plays during the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras used supernatural beings like ghosts and witches to help move the plot and convey a certain atmosphere. The depiction of supernatural creatures changed throughout the years. Many stories feature different kinds of ghosts and the reasons for their appearances. The contemporary image of ghosts and witches is vastly different from the medieval ones. In the past, ghosts appeared to convey a message or haunt the living, while witches were usually women who did not conform to the standards of society at the time. The term paper will explore the roles of The Weird Sisters and decide whether they are responsible for Macbeth’s actions or he alone is in charge of his destiny. The theme of prophecy and the role of destiny that was very popular at the time the play was written is also going to be explored and analyzed. Moreover, I will compare the Ghost of Hamlet to the Ghost of Banquo in the plays. The aim of this term paper is to trace supernatural creatures in Shakespearean plays and find reasons for the use of the supernatural in the plays. In Hamlet, I will focus my attention on the Ghost, its description, and its purpose in the play. In Macbeth, I will look at The Weird Sisters and the Ghost of Banquo. In order to contrast the ghosts in both plays, I will look at their appearances, purpose in the play, and personal motifs. Moreover, I will explore the role of witchcraft, prophecy and destiny in Macbeth.

Book Enchantment and Dis enchantment in Shakespeare and Early Modern Drama

Download or read book Enchantment and Dis enchantment in Shakespeare and Early Modern Drama written by Nandini Das and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses dealings with the wondrous, magical, holy, sacred, sainted, numinous, uncanny, auratic, and sacral in the plays of Shakespeare and contemporaries, produced in an era often associated with the irresistible rise of a thinned-out secular rationalism. By starting from the literary text and looking outwards to social, cultural, and historical aspects, it comes to grips with the instabilities of ‘enchanted’ and ‘disenchanted’ practices of thinking and knowledge-making in the early modern period. If what marvelously stands apart from conceptions of the world’s ordinary functioning might be said to be ‘enchanted’, is the enchantedness weakened, empowered, or modally altered by its translation to theatre? We have a received historical narrative of disenchantment as a large-scale early modern cultural process, inexorable in character, consisting of the substitution of a rationally understood and controllable world for one containing substantial areas of mystery. Early modern cultural change, however, involves transpositions, recreations, or fresh inventions of the enchanted, and not only its replacement in diminished or denatured form. This collection is centrally concerned with what happens in theatre, as a medium which can give power to experiences of wonder as well as circumscribe and curtail them, addressing plays written for the popular stage that contribute to and reflect significant contemporary reorientations of vision, awareness, and cognitive practice. The volume uses the idea of dis-enchantment/re-enchantment as a central hub to bring multiple perspectives to bear on early modern conceptualizations and theatricalizations of wonder, the sacred, and the supernatural from different vantage points, marking a significant contribution to studies of magic, witchcraft, enchantment, and natural philosophy in Shakespeare and early modern drama.

Book The Influence of the Audiences Supernatural Belief in Hamlet and Macbeth

Download or read book The Influence of the Audiences Supernatural Belief in Hamlet and Macbeth written by Jonas Heidger and published by Grin Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: "Hamlet" and "Macbeth" are two of Shakespeare's most successful and greatest tragedies. One reason why this can safely be said, is that both tragedies are two of the greatest written by Shakespeare and both are some of the most written about plays in all Western literature. Given the great interest, that has scholars and critics captured and fascinated to continue writing and interpreting every character, theme, and every turn of events throughout the years. Both tragedies have much in common, as they open in the country in which the action took place, with a reigning monarchy, which is threatened from both interior and exterior of the country, as the murder of a king and the approach of an enemy armament, are at the center of both plots. The murderer in both plays is a kinsman of the king, occupying the throne out of greed for power but is being punished by death at the end of the tragedy. Both plays are located abroad, as "Hamlet" is placed in medieval Denmark and "Macbeth" in medieval Scotland. But what these plays have most in common is that the supernatural is playing a key role. The ghost of the old King in "Hamlet" and the three witches in "Macbeth" are determining the two protagonists' actions and the establishment of the plays' atmosphere from the outset. The supernatural in both plays was influenced by beliefs prevalent during Shakespeare's lifetime.

Book The character development of Macbeth and of evil in Shakespeare s play

Download or read book The character development of Macbeth and of evil in Shakespeare s play written by Fabian Wähner and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Potsdam (Institut für Anglistik/Amerikanistik), course: Shakespeare’s Tragedies II, language: English, abstract: "So foul and fair a day I have not seen" (Shakespeare Act I, Scene 3, l. 38) . These words mentioned by Macbeth, the main protagonist of the corresponding tragedy, echo one of the main themes of the whole play: nothing is as it seems to be. This central topic also arises in other tragedies by William Shakespeare. In "Macbeth", this motive appears in a much stronger way. This tragedy tells the journey of a former loyal and shining hero, who evolves into the center of evil. "Macbeth" is considered as one of the most sinister tragedies of William Shakespeare. From the beginning on, the setting is depicted as a world full of nightmares, darkness, murder and treason. The play is constituted in a barren landscape, considered as a reference to hell. Most of the events happen during the nighttime, which supports this sinister impression. Some of the attempts that were made to analyze Macbeth, describe him as pure evil and a tyrant. A psychopath, who merciless defends his position as a king by killing every possible opponent who crosses his path. Other interpretations draw him as a victim, torn between the question of what is right and what is wrong and influenced by the evil that surrounds him. How can a man, who is firstly described as a hero and a loyal subject change in such a dramatic way? Which path does he take to become such a criminal individual like he mostly is described? What changes happen within his mind? These questions about the character development or in other words, the development of the evil within Macbeth are the core of this paper. In this research, the Reclam version of Shakespeare's "Macbeth", published 2011 in Ditzingen, Germany, is used.
