Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If it bleeds, it leads." The phrase captures television news directors' famed preference for opening newscasts with the most violent stories they can find. And what is true for news is often true for entertainment programming, where violence is used as a product to attract both viewers and sponsors. In this book, James Hamilton presents the first major theoretical and empirical examination of the market for television violence. Hamilton approaches television violence in the same way that other economists approach the problem of pollution: that is, as an example of market failure. He argues that television violence, like pollution, generates negative externalities, defined as costs borne by others than those involved in the production activity. Broadcasters seeking to attract viewers may not fully bear the costs to society of their violent programming, if those costs include such factors as increased levels of aggression and crime in society. Hamilton goes on to say that the comparison to pollution remains relevant when considering how to deal with the problem. Approaches devised to control violent programming, such as restricting it to certain times and rating programs according to the violence they contain, have parallels in zoning and education policies designed to protect the environment. Hamilton examines in detail the microstructure of incentives that operate at every level of television broadcasting, from programming and advertising to viewer behavior, so that remedies can be devised to reduce violent programming without restricting broadcasters' right to compete.

Book excerpt: Channeling Jerry is a book partly about Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead, but more specifically it highlights some of the musicians who continue to be influenced by Garcia's acclaimed artistry. It takes stock of where the music has gone since Jerry's passing in 1995 and where it might lead in the future. The project is dedicated to all the inspired artists and fans who continue to revel in the spirit of the Dead and who endeavor to keep the flame burning. The book features profiles of and in-depth conversations with twenty notable musicians who have honored and continue to explore the rich tradition started by Garcia and company. So far it includes talks with artists including Steve Kimock, Mark Karan, David Gans, Joni Bottari, Andrea Whitt, Katie Skene, John Kadlecik, Garrett Deloian, Halina Janusz, Lisa Malsberger, Vic DeRobertis, Stephen Inglis, Anela Lauren, Jeff Mattson, Joe Craven, Tyler Grant , Joe Marcinek , Marcus Rezak, Adam Perry and Josh Olken. It's a look at where the extended Grateful Dead music community stands today. Speaking to players who have performed with the remaining members of the Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band, as well as those who have created their own Garcia-inspired musical efforts, I attempt to shed light on the ongoing story of the sound as this seemingly unstoppable music continues to thrive and in some cases even reinvent itself. Each interview also includes a brief Gear Talk section (for the gear heads among us). Like a rose unfolding, Jerry's spirit lives on.

Book excerpt: This seminal volume is a comprehensive review of the literature on children's television, covering fifty years of academic research on children and television. The work includes studies of content, effects, and policy, and offers research conducted by social scientists and cultural studies scholars. The research questions represented here consider the content of programming, children's responses to television, regulation concerning children's television policies, issues of advertising, and concerns about sex and race stereotyping, often voicing concerns that children's entertainment be held to a higher standard. The volume also offers essays by scholars who have been seeking answers to some of the most critical questions addressed by this research. It represents the interdisciplinary nature of research on children and television, and draws on many academic traditions, including communication studies, psychology, sociology, education, economics, and medicine. The full bibliography is included on CD. Arguably the most comprehensive bibliography of research on children and television, this work illustrates the ongoing evolution of scholarship in this area, and establishes how it informs or changes public policy, as well as defining its role in shaping a future agenda. The volume will be a required resource for scholars, researchers, and policy makers concerned with issues of children and television, media policy, media literacy and education, and family studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking social history, Carol and Peter Stearns trace the two hundred-year development of anger, beginning with premodern colonial America. Drawing on diaries and popular advice literature of key periods, Anger deals with the everyday experiences of the family and workplace in its examination of our attempts to control our domestic lives and lessen social tensions by harnessing emotion. Offering an entirely new approach to the study of emotion, the authors inaugurate a new field of study termed "emotionology," which distinguishes collective emotional standards from the experience of emotion itself.

Book Social Development as Preference Management

Download or read book Social Development as Preference Management written by Rachel Karniol and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-12 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karniol engagingly presents social development in children through the language of preference management. Conversational excerpts garnered from around the world trace how parents talk about preferences, how infants' and children's emergent language conveys their preferences, how children themselves are impacted by others' preferences, and how they in turn influence the preferences of adults and peers. The language of preferences is used to crack into altruism, aggression, and morality, which are ways of coming to terms with other people's preferences. Behind the scenes is a cognitive engine that uses transformational thought – conducting temporal, imaginal, and mental transformations – to figure out other people's preferences and to find more sophisticated means of outmanoeuvring others by persuading them and playing with one's own mind and other people's minds when preferences are blocked. This book is a unique and sometimes amusing must-read for anyone interested in child development, language acquisition, socialisation, and communication.
