Download or read book Radioactivity Measurements written by W. B. Mann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have addressed the basic need for internationally consistent standards and methods demanded by the new and increasing use of radioactive materials, radiopharmaceuticals and labelled compounds. Particular emphasis is given to the basic and practical problems that may be encountered in measuring radioactivity. The text provides information and recommendations in the areas of radiation protection, focusing on quality control and the precautions necessary for the preparation and handling of radioactive substances. New information is also presented on the applications of both traditional and innovative instruments in the fields of diagnostic and clinical radiology, radiation protection, biomedical research, industrial and agricultural applications, power production and waste control.

This book was released on 1951 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An apparatus for measuring alpha-gamma and alpha-electron coincidences has been put in operation. This apparatus is described. From data obtained with this apparatus, decay schemes are postulated for Am241, Cm242, Th230, Pa231, U233. Coincidence data on Pu239, U234, and Po208,209,210 are also presented.

Download or read book Metrology and Physical Constants written by A. Di Giuseppe and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2013-10-21 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reliability and accuracy of systems of measurement continue to advance. We are about to enter a period of the most stable measurement system we can imagine with the anticipated new definitions of the SI units of measurement; a direct link between fundamental physics and metrology which will eliminate the current definition of the kilogram, until now based upon an artifact. This book presents selected papers from Course 185 of the Enrico Fermi International School of Physics, held in Varenna, Italy, in July 2012 and jointly organized with the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). The papers delivered at the school covered some of the most advanced topics in the discipline of metrology, including nano-technologies; quantum information and quantum devices; biology and medicine; food; surface quality; ionising radiation for health, environment, art and archaeology; and climate. The continuous and striking advances in basic research concerning atomic frequency standards operating both in the visible range and at microwave levels and the applications to satellite systems are also considered, in the framework of a historical review of the international organization of metrology, as are the problems inherent in uncertainty statements and definitions. This book will be of interest to all those whose work involves scientific measurement at the highest levels of accuracy.

Download or read book Quantum Measurements in Optics written by Paolo Tombesi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Quantum Measurements in Optics was held in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, January 21-25, 1991. This workshop was attended by 70 participants from 16 different countries. The subjects discussed at this workshop concentrated on quantum measurements in optics made possible by the recent advances in the generation and detection of light with low quantum noise. These advances have occurred simultaneously with the development of atomic traps capable of trapping a single atom for a considerable period of time. The interaction of a single two level atom with the single mode of the electromagnetic field is now possible in high Q microcavities. A new field of cavity QED has developed studying the properties of Rydberg atoms in microwave cavities. At this meeting we heard the first report of an atomic interferometer where a single atom passing through the two slits exhibits wave like interference phenomena. This new field involving the transfer of momentum from photons to atoms has lead to new possibilities for quantum nondemolition measurements on an optical field. We heard suggestions for such measurements at this meeting. With the new light sources available the possibility of using low quantum noise light in optical communications becomes close to reality. The problem of the propagation of quantum light field in optical fibres was actively discussed at this meeting.
