Abstract: ABSTRACT This study aims to identify the intended aims and objectives of the new S4-S5 geography curriculum in PSHE KLA and match them with the aims perceived by teachers. It means to find out whether gaps or differences exist between the intended and perceived curricula as well as factors that might have led to such gaps. Data were collected through a combined qualitative and quantitative research study by documentary analysis, semi-structured interviews and questionnaire survey. Morris' four images of education have been used to recognize the change in the trend of geography education. The results were interpreted and analyzed from a synthesized perspective of Lawton, Morris and Fullan. Most informants of this study regarded enquiry learning, promotion of high-order thinking skills, generic skills, geographical skills, student-centered learning and teaching, value-judgment development and China studies as the intended aims of the new S4-S5 geography curriculum. Gaps between intended and perceived geography curricula were revealed in the four areas, namely enquiry learning and examination pressure, China element, geographical skills and curriculum organization. Belief of teachers, students' enquiry ability, availability of teaching materials, timely training provided by the EMB, parallel examination format as reference were perceived as important factors that had led to such gaps. Implications on paradigm shift of teachers' mindset, new assessment format such as School-based assessment and the provision of support materials were conveyed in view of these gaps. The understanding of the gaps may provide useful reference for future curriculum development and evaluation in the PSHE KLA. viii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3568675 Subjects: Geography - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong Education, Secondary - China - Hong Kong - Curricula Geography teachers - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes Curriculum planning - China - Hong Kong

Book The Making of Geography as a Secondary School Subject

Download or read book The Making of Geography as a Secondary School Subject written by John Mortimer and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-02 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No work has ever been produced previously that shows how historically geography has been constructed as a subject for the senior years of secondary schooling in Western Australia from 1917 to 1997. In doing so, this book contributes to the existing corpus of international research on the history of curriculum and particularly the history of geography as a senior secondary school subject. Much of it is based on primary sources, including the textbooks and atlases used, along with syllabus manuals and geography examination papers. It also provides a framework for investigating the construction of senior secondary school geography curricula in other constituencies, and could act as a model for engaging in further research in curriculum history for other school subjects state-wide, nationally and internationally. The book also makes an important contribution to the fields of curriculum design, curriculum development and curriculum innovation. It will be of great interest to historians of education, comparative educationists, education leaders, policy makers and librarians.

Book Education in Hong Kong 1941 to 2001

Download or read book Education in Hong Kong 1941 to 2001 written by Anthony Sweeting and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It provides comprehensive coverage of developments in formal and informal education in Hong Kong from the end of 1941 to the beginning of the new millennium. As was true of its predecessor, each Part of this book is subdivided into three sections: Commentary, Chronicle, and Evidence. Such an organization facilitates flexible reading. Readers primarily interested in analysis, interpretation, and the identification of themes are likely to focus initially on the Commentary sections and to move, as they feel stimulated, to the relevant entries in the Chronicle and/or items of Evidence. Readers who seek either more encyclopedic understanding or detailed answers to specific questions may well wish to focus primarily or at least initially on the Chronicle sections, and then to search for substantiation in the Evidence section or for amplification in the author's Commentary. At times, some readers may wish to browse through the Evidence sections, reaching possibly serendipitous discoveries. Academic and general readers are likely to be particularly interested in Part I of the book, which deals with education in Hong Kong during the Japanese occupation, a topic that has received only very rare and generalization-bound treatment in other publications. The author offers insights into all levels of education. His conceptual scope incorporates many types of education - including the mainstream academic education, technical education, teacher education, special education, physical education, civic education, education that focuses on morals, that which focuses on culture, and the various sorts of non-formal and informal education.
