Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book sheds light on the question: Under what conditions do democratic attitudes and values take root in youth? Using a comparative perspective, Becoming Political describes alternative forms of education for democracy and points to consequences of various alternatives in diverse settings. This study of civic education and adolescent political attitudes contains rich descriptive information from interviews with students and teachers and classroom observations in England, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States. Such qualitative information gathered over the past decade complements findings from surveys administered to students ages fifteen through nineteen in fifty schools in the five countries. Chapters focus on civic education in the five countries, adolescent political attitudes and behaviors, gender and political attitudes, support for free expression for diverse views, and classroom climate and the investigation of controversial public policy issues. An appendix describes the varied political contexts in which youth in the five democracies are being politically socialized. The book will be of use to readers interested in social studies education, comparative education, and youth political socialization, as well as education for democracy.

Download or read book Cultural Literacy written by E.D. Hirsch, Jr. and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1988-04-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A must-read for parents and teachers, this major bestseller reveals how cultural literacy is the hidden key to effective education and presents 5000 facts that every literate American should know. In this forceful manifesto Professor E. D. Hirsch, Jr., argues that children in the United States are being deprived of the basic knowledge that would enable them to function in contemporary society. They lack cultural literacy: a grasp of background information that writers and speakers assume their audience already has. Even if a student has a basic competence in the English language, he or she has little chance of entering the American mainstream without knowing what a silicon chip is, or when the Civil War was fought. An important work that has engendered a nationwide debate on our educational standards, Cultural Literacy is a required reading for anyone concerned with our future as a literate nation.

Book School Smart Parent

Download or read book School Smart Parent written by Gene I. Maeroff and published by Crown. This book was released on 2012-05-02 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A commonsense book that helps parents help their children get the most out of learning and school by indicating what should be happening at given levels of the child's education. FROM CHAPTER ONE: "And so it is clear that the more parents can do to help their children reach full potential in school, the more likely the children are to find fulfillment in the competitive era ahead. This is a book meant to help parents achieve that goal; it is a blueprint for success. Parents must start early to groom their children for school. By the time a child is three years old, a substantial portion of his or her intelligence has already developed. And by the age of six, according to some experts, the child’s whole future is determined."

Book Congress and the Decline of Public Trust

Download or read book Congress and the Decline of Public Trust written by Joseph Cooper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1960s, trust in government has fallen precipitously. The nine essays composing this volume detail the present character of distrust, analyze its causes, assess the dangers it poses, and suggest remedies. The focus is on trust in the Congress. The contributors also examine patterns of trust in societal institutions and the presidency, especially in light of the Clinton impeachment controversy. Among the themes the book highlights are the impacts of present patterns of politics, the consequences of public misunderstanding of democratic politics, the significance of poll data, and the need for reform in campaign finance, media practices, and civic education.
