Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This compilation of resources on the United States Air Force Academy includes materials published between 1 January 1983 and 31 December 1989. It updates the third supplement, which was published in 1984. Earlier bibliographies on the Academy include the original, published in 1966, and the first and second supplements, published in 1968 and 1972, respectively. This bibliography does not include articles from local-area newspapers. Reports of specific athletic events are also excluded, regardless of the source. Although recent Academy Assemblies and Harmon Memorial Lectures are a part of this compilation, a number of materials published at the Academy are not included. Finally, a few items are cited which pre-date the years covered by this supplement. These were not listed in previous bibliographies. The basic arrangement is by subject.
Download or read book Bring Me Men and Women written by Judith Stiehm and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women's integration into the military academies afforded an almost unique opportunity to study social change. It was a tidy, well-defined natural experiment. The Air Force Academy was willing to permit the kind of external scrutiny that afforded an objective account of the facts of the first year of integration. For sixteen months the academy allowed the author to interview freely and repeatedly all persons concerned with planning and implementing women's admission. Working as a historian (with individuals and documents rather than with questionnaires), Stiehm tells the report of this first year as fully and as accurately as possible.

Download or read book Bring Me Men Brought Women written by Kathleen Utley Kornahrens and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-05-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 28, 1976, into the all-male bastion of the United States Air Force Academy 157 women stepped, challenging the slogan over the entrance ramp that read "Bring Me Men." These women inspired an upheaval of change in this tradition-bound military school. Their journey was one of survival in a male-dominated environment, where they struggled to find balance on a seesaw of ingrained gender discrimination and undesired special privileges. This book tells the story of the first female cadets in the United States Air Force Academy, and their fight to make a permanent place for themselves there. Chapters explore their struggle to be accepted, the difficulties of the training environment, the camaraderie and conflict with men and the hardships and joys of those who marched in the ranks of that first co-ed class.

Download or read book Women and the Military written by Ruth Margolies Beitler and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2021-04-07 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This addition to the Women and Society around the World series explores the roles, challenges, and accomplishments of women in the military in countries across the globe. Around the world, millions of men serve in their countries' militaries, be it on land, on the seas, or in the air. But while many militaries have opened all positions to women, even those on the front lines, others remain closed. Countries have cited a number of reasons for their policies, including changing views of women and the military, conscription, and economic and demographic trends. Written by a professor of comparative politics at the United States Military Academy at West Point and an active duty army major, this book seeks to provide an understanding of women's roles in militaries around the world. The book is organized by region, exploring societal and cultural views of masculinity and war, as well as factors influencing changing views of women and the military, including conscription and economic and demographic trends. Topics also include sexual harassment, recruitment, and views on women's physicality and strength. High school students, undergraduates, and general readers will find this cross-cultural study a fascinating and important resource.
