Book Nationalizing Empires

Download or read book Nationalizing Empires written by Stefan Berger and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in Nationalizing Empires challenge the dichotomy between empire and nation state that for decades has dominated historiography. The authors center their attention on nation-building in the imperial core and maintain that the nineteenth century, rather than the age of nation-states, was the age of empires and nationalism. They identify a number of instances where nation building projects in the imperial metropolis aimed at the preservation and extension of empires rather than at their dissolution or the transformation of entire empires into nation states. Such observations have until recently largely escaped theoretical reflection.

Book The New Republic

Download or read book The New Republic written by L. U. Reavis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Republic: Or the Transition Complete, With an Approaching Change of National Empire, Based Upon the Commercial and Industrial Expansion of the Great West; Together With Hints on National Safety and Social Progress The first edition of these pages was written the latter part of December 1866, and the first part of January, 1867. In the meantime, the current, of public thought and events touching the matter herein contained have flowed in support of its general truth. Encouraged by many favorable notices from the press and distinguished men of the country, I resolved to recast and enlarge the little pamphlet for a second publication. Though very brief in its character and treatment of great questions, and to many will appear extravagant in its phraseology, yet the data that furnished its foundation, and which gave birth to its ideas, are held to be correct, as they come from reliable sources. Believing that there is nothing written herein to injure the common good of all, but that every page, however feeble, is an indication of something better to the great Republic and her people, it is submitted by one who, though humble, has no selfish motive to gratify, nor no higher aspiration than that of contributing something for the good of his country and the human race; and though the work is small, it is a suggestion of a volume which will yet come from a more gifted pen. "Go, little book, from this my solitude, I cast thee on the waters; go thy way." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Imperialism as we knew it may be no more, but Empire is alive and well. It is, as Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri demonstrate in this bold work, the new political order of globalization. Their book shows how this emerging Empire is fundamentally different from the imperialism of European dominance and capitalist expansion in previous eras. Rather, today's Empire draws on elements of U.S. constitutionalism, with its tradition of hybrid identities and expanding frontiers. More than analysis, Empire is also an unabashedly utopian work of political philosophy.
