Book excerpt: This qualitative phenomenological study investigated 12 African American nonresident fathers. The participants had children from single parent inner-city homes located in the upper Midwest. The purpose of the study was to stimulate awareness of effective ways to engage the African American nonresident father in the child's life and to provide further insight into social and policy barriers that affect the father's involvement and relationship with his child. The results of the study indicated parental conflict often served to hamper involvement and quality of relationships with their children. In addition, policies and procedures practiced by the courts and schools served to further deprive the fathers the opportunity to afford their children the father image essential to their emotional and educational development. Modification of existing assumptions about family structure and single mother households and the current policy of custody and visitation rights merit future research.

Then, the research on father-daughter relationships is examined including the impact of father absence on daughters and on gender identity. This section concludes with a discussion of serving adolescents in the foster care system. Part II focuses on the importance of a two-parent home, communal fathering, and equalitarian households. Cultural implications and barriers to relationships are also explored. This section concludes with a discussion of the struggles Black men face with role definitions. The book concludes with a discussion of the impact of adoption and health issues on Black fathers and their children, and the need for more effective therapeutic interventions that include a perspective centered in the traditions and cultures of Afrika in learning to become a father. The final chapter offers an intervention model to aid in fatherhood. An ideal supplementary text for courses on fathers and fathering, introduction to the family, parenting, African American families/men, men and masculinity, Black studies, race and ethnic relations, and family issues taught in a variety of departments, the book also appeals to social service providers, policy makers, and clergy who work with community institutions.

Book excerpt: Over the year it has been a challenge to find factors and interventions to address Father Involvement. The main purpose of this thesis project was to examine the factors associated father involvement as well as the intervention to address the problem. The thesis project is guided by two research questions: 1) What factors are associated with Father Involvement among Non-Resident African American Fathers? 2) What effects do fatherhood programs, in comparison to co-parenting programs, have on father involvement among non-resident African American Fathers? Specifically, the literature review was developed but not limited to peer-reviewed journals, quasi-experimental design, and qualitative data. The literature found that Father Involvement is positively influenced by Fathers Characteristics, Childhood Characteristics and Contextual Sources of Stress and Support. Additionally, the literature found fatherhood programs were effective in addressing father involvement through reading to their child, participating in school activities, and father-child communication. Moreover, the Chicago Parent Program was developed to address father involvement at day care centers and it was found to be effective on father involvement through child play and fathers relying on corporal punishment. The high prevalence of mental health, specifically, depression on non-resident father involvement suggests that there is an ongoing need in research to address such issue.

Black Fathers in Contemporary American Society looks at father absence from two sides, offering an in-depth analysis of how the absence of African American fathers affects their children, their relationships, and society as a whole, while countering the notion that father absence and family fragmentation within the African American community is inevitable. Editors Obie Clayton, Ronald B. Mincy, and David Blankenhorn lead a diverse group of contributors encompassing a range of disciplines and ideological perspectives who all agree that father absence among black families is one of the most pressing social problems today. In part I, the contributors offer possible explanations for the decline in marriage among African American families.
