Book excerpt: ' this volume represents perhaps the best available report on state-of-the-science cretaceous research. Some may query the wisdom of grand schemes such as the GSGP, believing that science is best left to the imaginative individual. This useful volume offers a persuasive counter-argument. That it speaks with many voices (if not languages) is to be expected and indeed adds to its strength.' Cretaceous Research 11, 1990

Download or read book Active Geophysical Monitoring written by and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-03-05 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Active geophysical monitoring is an important new method for studying time-evolving structures and states in the tectonically active Earth's lithosphere. It is based on repeated time-lapse observations and interpretation of rock-induced changes in geophysical fields periodically excited by controlled sources. In this book, the results of strategic systematic development and the application of new technologies for active geophysical monitoring are presented. The authors demonstrate that active monitoring may drastically change solid Earth geophysics, through the acquisition of substantially new information, based on high accuracy and real-time observations. Active monitoring also provides new means for disaster mitigation, in conjunction with substantial international and interdisciplinary cooperation. - Introduction of a new concept - Most experienced authors in the field - Comprehensiveness

Download or read book Marine Palaeoenvironmental Analysis from Fossils written by Dan W. J. Bosence and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1995 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume critically reviews the use of fossils for the analysis of palaeoenvironments. The papers are multi-disciplinary, drawing on a host of geochemical, palaeoecological and palaeontological methods from traditional taxonomic uniformitarianism to more recently developed geochemical isotopic analyses. The approach of the book is analytical rather than taxonomic, concentrating on a range of techniques. The common thread, however, is that it is palaeontological material that is being considered, whether it be identifiable body fossils, trace fossils, distinctive fossil associates, diagenetically unaltered material or organic compounds. Using a number of methods, and comparing their results, allows different environmental controls to be isolated and provides more information on the record of past environmental parameters. The volume focuses on the data obtained from organisms and their remains and will be of importance to sedimentologists, stratigraphers and palaeontolgists who need to maximize their palaeoenvironmental interpretations of depositonal environments, facies models, sequence stratigraphy and palaeoclimates.--Provided by publisher.
Download or read book Mesozoic and Cenozoic Paleocontinental Maps written by A. G. Smith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1977-06-09 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1977, this book shows the positions of the major continental areas during the past 220 million years as four series of computer-drawn maps. The maps have been drawn for the present day, 10 and 20 million years ago, then at 20-million-year intervals back to 220 million years. All the maps are based on quantitative geophysical or topographic information: paleomagnetic pole positions, ocean floor magnetic anomalies, and best fits of the continental margins. Mercator, north polar and south polar sterographic, and Lambert equal-area maps of each selected time interval are provided. Many interesting problems in the Earth Sciences are global; they need to be seen in a proper global setting. The maps provide such a framework on which a very wide range of geological information may be plotted. Problems in fields as widely separated as palenontology, stratigraphy, geochemistry and tectonics may usefully be displayed on these maps.

Plankton Stratigraphy Volume 2 Radiolaria Diatoms Silicoflagellates Dinoflagellates and Ichthyoliths
Download or read book Plankton Stratigraphy Volume 2 Radiolaria Diatoms Silicoflagellates Dinoflagellates and Ichthyoliths written by Hans M. Bolli and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1989-05-25 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive synthesis of our knowledge of the biostratigraphy of marine plankton is the work of an international team of eighteen authors. It covers all the major fossil groups that can be used to date sediments and rocks in the time interval Late Mesozoic to Holocene. Altogether more than 3200 taxa are considered, almost all of which are illustrated and depicted on range charts, making the book a valuable work of reference in the earth sciences. For ease of reference by specialists interested in either calcareous or non-calcareous microfossils, the original work is now divided into two independent volumes. Volume 2 describes siliceous and other non-calcareous microfossils, covering radiolaria, diatoms, silicoflagellates, dinoflagellates and ichthyoliths.
