Book excerpt: The opening of a new permanent exhibition on religion in the Jewish Historical Museum of Amsterdam in November 2004, which was accompanied by a catalogue entitled Gifts from the Heart: Ceremonial Objects from the Jewish Historical Museum, Amsterdam, gave rise to the idea for this volume. Both this publication and the preceding catalogue on the museum's textiles collection (1997) explore Dutch Jewish ceremonial objects, their aesthetic quality and historical background. This issue of Studia Rosenthaliana covers a wider field: the setting is Europe rather than local, and the primary focus is ceremonial objects in their transcultural context. The first cluster of contributions explore the origins of the forms and symbolism of various ceremonial objects, and interpret them as the outcome of the interplay between Jewish (religious) tradition and the surrounding culture. The articles in the second group deal with the impact of specific historical circumstances on objects, their conception and production. In the third section, two inventories of ceremonial objects belonging to Amsterdam's Sephardi and Ashkenazi communities of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are presented. Following our tradition, the volume concludes with an appropriate item from the Bibliotheca Rosenthaliana.

Book excerpt: By the end of France’s long seventeenth century, the seminary-trained, reform-minded Catholic priest had crystalized into a type recognizable by his clothing, gestures, and ceremonial skill. Although critics denounced these priests as hypocrites or models for Molière’s Tartuffe, seminaries associated the features of this priestly identity with the idea of the vray ecclésiastique, or true churchman. Ceremonial Splendor examines the way France’s early seminaries promoted the emergence and construction of the true churchman as a mode of embodiment and ecclesiastical ideal between approximately 1630 and 1730. Based on an analysis of sources that regulated priestly training in France, such as seminary rules and manuals, liturgical handbooks, ecclesiastical pamphlets and conferences, and episcopal edicts, the book uses theories of performance to reconstruct the way clergymen learned to conduct liturgical ceremonies, abide by clerical norms, and aspire to perfection. Joy Palacios shows how the process of crafting a priestly identity involved a wide range of performances, including improvisation, role-playing, and the display of skills. In isolation, any one of these performance obligations, if executed in a way that drew attention to the self, could undermine a clergyman’s priestly persona and threaten the institution of the priesthood more broadly. Seminaries counteracted the ever-present threat of theatricality by ceremonializing the clergyman’s daily life, rendering his body and gestures contiguous with the mass. Through its focus on priestly identity, Ceremonial Splendor reconsiders the relationship between Church and theater in early modern France and uncovers ritual strategies that continue to shape religious authority today.

They included in the ethnological section religions as one of the subjects suitable for museum collections. During the course Of years Objects pertaining to religious cults formed a considerable part Of the series. In exhibiting its material the Museum adopted the plan Of treating special subjects independently Of areas or national limitations in order to show the history Of given ideas. In 1890 the question was taken up Of the possibility Of applying such treatment to religion, a subject important in the history Of humanity. There was doubt, however, in the minds Of many as to whether the abstract ideas which group themselves about the word religion could be adequately or even fairly portrayed through ceremonial Objects, numerous as they might be. Two members Of the staff were instructed, while abroad, to examine into this subject, with the result that, in 1891, it was decided to secure Objects Of religious ceremony with the view primarily to exhibit them at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and ultimately with the intention Of bringing them together for installation in the United States National Museum. At that time the tendency Of museums abroad, and somewhat among the students of the history Of religions generally, was to deal only with the religious practices and ideas Of the barbarous nations, and to treat but sparingly those of the more civilized and cultivated nations Of the earth. It was determined, in taking up the subject here, to adopt a course contrary to that hitherto followed, and to endeavor, from the educational point Of view, to interest the people in the history Of religion by leading them to the unknown.
