Book excerpt: Over the past few semesters a group of neurologists, neurophysiologists, and brain theorists in various departments of Tlibingen University have gathered periodically in an effort to review ideas and evidence on cerebel lar functions. At times, general solutions seemed close, when credit was given to various theoretical proposals advanced since the early days of cer ebellar physiology, however, it became clear in every case that a large part of the available facts refused to submit to the general ideas. As believers in the power of scientific discussion, we felt that the time was ripe for posing the problem of the cerebellum once more to a well articulated group of specialists that would include proponents of every disparate point of view. The sponsorship of the Max Planck Society and of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, to whom we express our profound gratitude, made it possible to organize an international meeting in Septem ber, 1983. The aim of making new, even extravagant ideas palatable to each other was well accomplished by the participants. We trust that some of the ensuing excitement has been carried over into the printed version.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cerebellar Functions The cerebellum is an unpaired median symmetrical organ, Situated, in man, below the cerebral hemispheres which cover it entirely, behind the corpora quadrigemini, and above the pons Varolii and the medulla oblongata in which it makes a deep groove or concavity and which it overlaps largely on the Sides. With its furrowed and lamellated appearance it is related to all the other parts of the central nervous system in which, by volume, it occupies the Second place it is but a misnomer to call it the little brain or Kleinhirn as do the Germans as this name is neither justified by morphology, histology nor physiology. Book excerpt: Progress in Brain Research is the most acclaimed and accomplished series in neuroscience, firmly established as an extensive documentation of the advances in contemporary brain research. The volumes, some of which are derived from important international symposia, contain authoritative reviews and original articles by invited specialists. The rigorous editing of the volumes assures that they will appeal to all laboratory and clinical brain research workers in the various disciplines: neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, neuroendocrinology, neuropathology, basic neurology, biological psychiatry, and the behavioral sciences. This volume, The Cerebellum and Memory Formation: Structure, Computation and Function, covers topics including feedback control of cerebellar learning; cortico-cerebellar organization and skill acquisition; cerebellar plasticity and learning in the oculomotor system, and more. - Leading authors review the state-of-the-art in their field of investigation, and provide their views and perspectives for future research - The volume reflects current thinking about the ways in which the cerebellum can engage in learning, and the contributors come from a variety of research fields - The chapters express perspectives from different levels of analysis that range from molecular and cellular mechanisms through to long-range systems that allow the cerebellum to communicate with other brain areas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTEGRATED NEUROSCIENCES This textbook takes as a premise that, in order to make intelligent diagnosis and provide a rational treatment in disorders of the nervous system, it is necessary to develop the capacity to answer the basic questions of clinical neurology: (1) Where is the disease process located? (2) What is the nature of the disease process? The purpose of this textbook is to enable the medical student to acquire the basic information of the neurosciences and neurology and most importantly the ability to apply that information to the solution of clinical problems. The authors also suggest that hospital trips be a part of any Clinical Neurosciences Course so that the student can put into actual practice what he has learned in the classroom. We believe that this textbook will be of value to the student throughout the four years of the medical school curriculum. Medical, psychiatry and neurology residents may also find this text of value as an introduction or review. It is more true in neurology than in any other system of medicine that a firm knowledge of basic science material, that is, the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the nervous system, enables the student and physician to readily arrive at the diagnosis of where the disease process is located and the nature of the most likely pathology. Subsequently that knowledge may be applied to problem solving in clinical situations.
