Book Aphids as Crop Pests 2nd Edition

Download or read book Aphids as Crop Pests 2nd Edition written by Helmut F van Emden and published by CABI. This book was released on 2017-08-23 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aphids are among the major global pest groups, causing serious economic damage to many food and commodity crops in most parts of the world. This revision and update of the well-received first edition published ten years ago reflects the expansion of research in genomics, endosymbionts and semiochemicals, as well as the shift from control of aphids with insecticides to a more integrated approach imposed by increasing resistance in the aphids and government restrictions on pesticides. The book remains a comprehensive and up-to-date reference work on the biology of aphids, the various methods of controlling them and the progress of integrated pest management as illustrated by ten case histories.

Book Advances in Understanding Insect Pests Affecting Wheat and Other Cereals

Download or read book Advances in Understanding Insect Pests Affecting Wheat and Other Cereals written by Sanford D. Eigenbrode and published by Burleigh Dodds Series in Agricultural Science. This book was released on 2023-02-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insect pests remain a significant threat to cereal production due to the direct damage they can cause to crops, but also due to their ability to act as vectors of wheat pathogens, particularly plant viruses. With growing concerns surrounding the impact of climate change on both native and invasive pest invasions, coupled with the rising threat of global food insecurity, more research is required to understand the major insect pests of cereals, including how best to control and monitor them. Advances in understanding insect pests affecting wheat and other cereals provides a comprehensive review of the wealth of research that addresses this challenge. This collection discusses the major insect pests affecting key cereal crops, such as wheat. Each chapter covers the most recent developments in fundamental and applied research on major pests, such as the Russian wheat aphid, Hessian fly and wheat curl mite, and shows how better understanding of these pests can be used to improve integrated pest management (IPM) strategies.

Book Molluscs as Crop Pests

Download or read book Molluscs as Crop Pests written by G. M. Barker and published by CABI. This book was released on 2002-03-21 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mollusc species currently constitute a major threat to sustainable agriculture. This threat is associated with cultivation of new crops, intensification of agricultural production systems and the spread through human trade and travel of species adapted to these modified environments. In some crops their significance is only now becoming apparent with the decline in the importance of other pest groups which can be effectively controlled. The book focuses on: toxicology of chemicals; deployment of molluscicides in baits; specific crop situations worldwide; current pest status of mollusc species and progress towards development of solutions.

Book Guidelines for monitoring diseases pests and weeds in cereal crops

Download or read book Guidelines for monitoring diseases pests and weeds in cereal crops written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preventive measures to combat diseases, pests, and weeds in cereal crops are more important than ever in regions like Central Asia where populations are growing. Subject to pests and diseases such as yellow rust, wheat is the area’s main staple food. All too often in recent years, harvests have suffered significant losses in yield. New guidelines laid out in FAO’s just-released publication, Monitoring Diseases, Pests, and Weeds in cereal crops, provide a standardized overview of monitoring and controlling of pests and diseases that plague cereal crops in the region. Put into practice, the guidelines should help increase per capita grain production in Central Asia, reducing economic losses for farmers and rural poverty in the region. In Central Asian countries where demand for agricultural commodities significantly outweighs domestic supply, agricultural science offers vital tools. The introduction of varieties that are resistant to diseases and tolerant of climatic factors is one example. “Cereal crops serve a special role in Central Asia,” said FAO agricultural officer Hafiz Muminjanov. “Here, wheat consumption per capita is the highest – more than 200 kilos per year – and provides the majority of calories and protein for the region.” The new booklet unifies guidelines for monitoring diseases, pests, and weeds in cereal crops, in response to recommendations from a regional experts consultation held in 2013 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Book Pests of Stored Foodstuffs and their Control

Download or read book Pests of Stored Foodstuffs and their Control written by Dennis S. Hill and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to serve as an introduction to the pests of stored foodstuffs of all types on a worldwide basis, and as a broad reference text. It is aimed at being complementary to the more detailed and more specific texts that are listed in the References. It does presuppose an adequate basic knowledge of entomology and zoology in the user. The stored products mentioned in the text are commercial products in the widest sense, including all types of plant and animal materials in addition to grain and prepared foodstuffs. Storage is viewed very broadly, from one day on a shelf to several years in a silo, or refrigerated store at -20°C. In many publications the produce surveyed has been restricted to stored grains, because of their obvious importance to human society, and because of the great quantities involved. For many different materials, of both plant and animal origin, there is a shortage of specific information, but it is to be hoped that this situation will gradually be rectified. It should be clearly understood that any reference to animal pests is made in the strict zoological sense, and refers to any members of the Kingdom Animalia. There is a regrettable tendency in some circles to use the term ‘animal’ as being synonymous with ‘mammal’ – a habit to be deplored! There is definite emphasis on animal pests in this text, but micro-organisms are included where relevant.
