Book Merchants National Bank of the the City of New York

Download or read book Merchants National Bank of the the City of New York written by Philip G. Hubert and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Merchants' National Bank of the the City of New York: A History of Its First Century, Compiled From Official Records at the Request of the Directors It is often said that the happiest and most prosperous of nations have no histories. As the senior Director of the Merchants' National Bank remarked to the compiler of the present volume, this is apt to be true of banks as well as of nations. There are no sensational events in the life of the Bank to relate. Its history is one of conservative, persistent, intelligent work which has earned the respect and consideration of the community. As the name implies, it has been a bank managed by merchants for merchants. It has had no phenomenal ups or downs. Nevertheless a great deal may be said of any institution one hundred years old. The contrast between the social and business conditions of New York in 1803 with those of to-day alone offers an interesting field of inquiry. Much may also be said of the long line of distinguished merchants who have served the Bank - men identified with the growth of New York from a city of 75,000 inhabitants to a metropolis second only to London in population and financial importance. The compiler desires to acknowledge the help afforded him by Mr. Robert M. Gallaway, the President; by Messrs. John A. Stewart and Charles Stewart Smith, Directors; by Mr. Cornelius V. Banta, formerly Cashier of the Bank; and especially by Mr. Clinton B. Price, Transfer-Clerk of the Bank, who has made the book a labor of love from the beginning. Thanks are also due to many of the Directors and friends of the Bank for suggestions and help in the way of portraits and data concerning former officers of the institution. Book The Manhattan Company

Download or read book The Manhattan Company written by Gregory S. Hunter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1989, is a valuable addition to the literature on the study of American business history. Most previous historians, however, have studied the management of business in a vacuum, separating the internal affairs of particular companies from the social and political environments in which corporations existed. From 1799 to 1842 the Manhattan Company had three distinct divisions: a water works, a main bank in New York City, and bank branches in upstate New York. To successfully manage this complicated and decentralised business, the Manhattan Company’s directors had to be particularly sensitive the social and political environments. This book traces the history of banking in New York, an examination of the nature and significance of the Company’s charter, and a detailed analysis of the Company’s three divisions.

Book Banking Panics of the Gilded Age

Download or read book Banking Panics of the Gilded Age written by Elmus Wicker and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major study of post-Civil War banking panics in almost a century. The author has constructed for the first time estimates of bank closures and their incidence in each of the five separate banking disturbances. The author also reevaluates the role of the New York Clearing House in forestalling several panics and explains why it failed to do so in 1893 and 1907, concluding that structural defects of the National Banking Act were not the primary cause of the panics.
