Late hours in the dark, editing her latest project were nothing new; but little did she know that tonight she was on a collision course with terrorists that would flip her life upside down and prove to her that everything she knew was a lie. In the midst of a series of terror attacks, she’s learning that the universe is a little more crowded than she realized. Kat owes her life to her very own version of a knight in shining armor: An Armada Centurion in Black Armor. Meet Ranger. Her world will never be the same. From the book: And how do you plan on making your escape?" "Sir, do you really think you could stop me if I wanted to leave? When the time comes, I will walk out that door under my own power and whether or not you leave with me as my friend or are left lying unconscious in the corner there will be your choice. For my part in this, I'd like for us to be friends because we do have a mutual enemy."

Book Centurion In the Valley of the God Kings

Download or read book Centurion In the Valley of the God Kings written by Steven F Warnock and published by Wordsmith Publishing. This book was released on with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joined by his Myrmidon Team, Centurion Ranger prepares to continue his war against the alien Rochack that have invaded Kat Delbath’s homeworld. First, though, he needs to gather new allies and new resources and prepare them for a battle unlike any the world has seen before. Alongside old friends and new, Ranger will destroy this threat to Humanity’s safety. From the book "You are Cobbald, yes? Son of the late Minister of War?" Zeno asked. He frowned when Edgar nodded confirmation. "My condolences, Mister Cobbald. If I understand Ranger’s metaphor, you more than most, uh, ‘have a dog in the fight’." "No, sir," Edgar said. "What I have is a duty. A duty to my fellow man to protect them from these alien ass clowns that have dared to land on our world, sir." He pointed a thumb at Ranger. "These aliens may be jerks, but they're friendly jerks. They're willing to pay us to work for them. With their tech. Equal shares to governments that sign on, special deals to business partners in the private sector. Imagine, sir, being able to have bases on Huginn and Muninn, to mine asteroids for metals and minerals that are exceedingly rare here. You should see the fusion plants on that little ship. The size of a tractor tire but able to put out more energy than the nuclear plant powering New Inisfrack."

Book The Impossible State

Download or read book The Impossible State written by Wael B. Hallaq and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wael B. Hallaq boldly argues that the "Islamic state," judged by any standard definition of what the modern state represents, is both impossible and inherently self-contradictory. Comparing the legal, political, moral, and constitutional histories of premodern Islam and Euro-America, he finds the adoption and practice of the modern state to be highly problematic for modern Muslims. He also critiques more expansively modernity's moral predicament, which renders impossible any project resting solely on ethical foundations. The modern state not only suffers from serious legal, political, and constitutional issues, Hallaq argues, but also, by its very nature, fashions a subject inconsistent with what it means to be, or to live as, a Muslim. By Islamic standards, the state's technologies of the self are severely lacking in moral substance, and today's Islamic state, as Hallaq shows, has done little to advance an acceptable form of genuine Shari'a governance. The Islamists' constitutional battles in Egypt and Pakistan, the Islamic legal and political failures of the Iranian Revolution, and similar disappointments underscore this fact. Nevertheless, the state remains the favored template of the Islamists and the ulama (Muslim clergymen). Providing Muslims with a path toward realizing the good life, Hallaq turns to the rich moral resources of Islamic history. Along the way, he proves political and other "crises of Islam" are not unique to the Islamic world nor to the Muslim religion. These crises are integral to the modern condition of both East and West, and by acknowledging these parallels, Muslims can engage more productively with their Western counterparts.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Turn: Washington’s Spies, now an original series on AMC Based on remarkable new research, acclaimed historian Alexander Rose brings to life the true story of the spy ring that helped America win the Revolutionary War. For the first time, Rose takes us beyond the battlefront and deep into the shadowy underworld of double agents and triple crosses, covert operations and code breaking, and unmasks the courageous, flawed men who inhabited this wilderness of mirrors—including the spymaster at the heart of it all. In the summer of 1778, with the war poised to turn in his favor, General George Washington desperately needed to know where the British would strike next. To that end, he unleashed his secret weapon: an unlikely ring of spies in New York charged with discovering the enemy’s battle plans and military strategy. Washington’s small band included a young Quaker torn between political principle and family loyalty, a swashbuckling sailor addicted to the perils of espionage, a hard-drinking barkeep, a Yale-educated cavalryman and friend of the doomed Nathan Hale, and a peaceful, sickly farmer who begged Washington to let him retire but who always came through in the end. Personally guiding these imperfect everyday heroes was Washington himself. In an era when officers were gentlemen, and gentlemen didn’ t spy, he possessed an extraordinary talent for deception—and proved an adept spymaster. The men he mentored were dubbed the Culper Ring. The British secret service tried to hunt them down, but they escaped by the closest of shaves thanks to their ciphers, dead drops, and invisible ink. Rose’s thrilling narrative tells the unknown story of the Revolution–the murderous intelligence war, gunrunning and kidnapping, defectors and executioners—that has never appeared in the history books. But Washington’s Spies is also a spirited, touching account of friendship and trust, fear and betrayal, amid the dark and silent world of the spy.
