Book Rebuilding Cities from Medieval to Modern Times

Download or read book Rebuilding Cities from Medieval to Modern Times written by Percy Johnson-Marshall and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unique in the literature of planners, architects, and urban officials, Rebuilding Cities is a compendium and analysis of the achievements of city planning from the ""Ideal City"" of Palmanova in 1593 to the innovative achievements of planners and designers of the twentieth century. As such, it is vital reading for anyone concerned with the problem of rebuilding and revitalizing cities after disasters--either of a human or physical decimation. Rebuilding Cities covers and includes medieval nuclei to urban sprawl; physical, economic, and social factors in planning; and the changing nature of components of cities incorporating elements from different periods in a single visual scheme. Also included are analysis of planning schemes from Indian and Greek visionaries; legislative and administrative changes needed for successful planning; the massive redevelopment that happened in London after World War Two; renewal schemes; and urban design and work throughout the world. The remarkable clarity and thoroughness of the book and its abundant illustrations clearly demonstrate the successes and failures of planning schemes and lays a solid groundwork for intelligent assessment of the goals and practical possibilities of city planning. Teachers and students of planning and architecture, professionals actively engaged in the field, and all who visualize a truly civilized urban environment will find this book immensely helpful and satisfying.

Book In the Shadow of Marriage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anne M. O. Griffiths
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 1997
  • ISBN : 9780226308739
  • Pages : 354 pages

Download or read book In the Shadow of Marriage written by Anne M. O. Griffiths and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anne Griffiths originally went to Botswana to establish a university course in family law. But independent fieldwork in Botswana convinced her of the central role of the traditional customary legal system that stands alongside the colonial common law of courts and magistrates she was examining in her course. In the first comparative work on these two systems, Griffiths shows how the structure of both legal institutions is based on power and gender relations that heavily favor males. Griffiths's analysis is based on careful observation of how people actually experience the law as well as the more standard tools of statutes and cases familiar to Western legal scholars. She explains how women's access to law is determined by social relations over which they have little control. In this powerful feminist critique of law and anthropology, Griffiths shows how law and custom are inseparable for Kwena women. Both colonial common law and customary law pose comparable and constant challenges to Kwena women's attempts to improve their positions in society.

Book The Earth the City and the Hidden Narrative of Race

Download or read book The Earth the City and the Hidden Narrative of Race written by Carl Anthony and published by New Village Press. This book was released on 2017-10-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, Carl Anthony shares his perspectives as an African-American child in post-World War II Philadelphia; a student and civil rights activist in 1960s Harlem; a traveling student of West African architecture; and an architect, planner, and environmental justice advocate in Berkeley. He contextualizes this within American urbanism and human origins, making profoundly personal both African American and American urban histories as well as planetary origins and environmental issues, to not only bring a new worldview to people of color, but to set forth a truly inclusive vision of our shared planetary future. The Earth, the City, and the Hidden Narrative of Race connects the logics behind slavery, community disinvestment, and environmental exploitation to address the most pressing issues of our time in a cohesive and foundational manner. Most books dealing with these topics and periods silo issues apart from one another, but this book contextualizes the connections between social movements and issues, providing tremendous insight into successful movement building. Anthony's rich narrative describes both being at the mercy of racism, urban disinvestment, and environmental injustice as well as fighting against these forces with a variety of strategies. Because this work is both a personal memoir and an exposition of ideas, it will appeal to those who appreciate thoughtful and unique writing on issues of race, including individuals exploring their own African American identity, as well as progressive audiences of organizations and community leaders and professionals interested in democratizing power and advancing equitable policies for low-income communities and historically disenfranchised communities.
