Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Central America in My Heart/Centro Am?rica en el coraz?n, Gonzales expresses nostalgia for the beauty of his native Honduras, sharing his passion and sense of loss. Vacillating between rage and undying love, Gonzales's poems express his deep cultural appreciation for the people of his homeland while he reveals their struggles and berates a corrupt and unjust political and economic system. Inspired by Pablo Neruda, Roberto Sosa, and Jorge Luis Borges, Gonzales hopes to lessen the antipathy within Honduras and awaken a social consciousness through his poems, which are presented in both Spanish and English. Gonzales was awarded Yale University's coveted Theron Rockwell Field Prize in 1991 for his anthology of poems Donde el plomo flota (Where Lead Floats). He was the first undergraduate to receive the award.

Download or read book Central America in the New Millennium written by Jennifer L. Burrell and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most non-Central Americans think of the narrow neck between Mexico and Colombia in terms of dramatic past revolutions and lauded peace agreements, or sensational problems of gang violence and natural disasters. In this volume, the contributors examine regional circumstances within frames of democratization and neoliberalism, as they shape lived experiences of transition. The authors--anthropologists and social scientists from the United States, Europe, and Central America--argue that the process of regions and nations "disappearing" (being erased from geopolitical notice) is integral to upholding a new, post-Cold War world order--and that a new framework for examining political processes must be accessible, socially collaborative, and in dialogue with the lived processes of suffering and struggle engaged by people in Central America and the world in the name of democracy.

Download or read book Within My Heart written by Michael A. Van Horn and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book illustrates how Christianity in the modern era has been shaped in the direction of subjectivity. In the Enlightenment, after Locke required faith to submit to reason's judgment, Kant argued that religion should remain within the bounds of reason only. Schleiermacher shifted attention away from belief to devotion to Christ and a feeling of absolute dependence on God. Rejecting Hegel's system, Kierkegaard summoned his readers to a unique subjective approach to justification by faith. Revivalist Evangelicalism has been perceived, and portrayed itself, as a rejection of modernism. This study argues instead that the Evangelical-revivalist movement is unmistakably modern in its assumptions regarding the nature of faith. The Pietist impulse, fueled in part by modern anthropocentrism and subjectivism in religious belief, was appropriated by the Evangelical revivalists, such as John Wesley, George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, and, later, Charles Finney. In short, Christianity today is a religion of the heart.

I know no one who so movingly and honestly brings us before God in prayers that touch the personal and the social dimensions of our lives. I suspect that I will pray from this book the rest of my life." --Tex Sample, Coordinator of The Network for the Study of U. S. Lifestyles, Robert B. and Kathleen Professor Emeritus of Church and Society, Saint Paul School of Theology "Does prayer have to be stilted or sentimental? Can it express real feeling without getting weepy? Ted Loder shows how prayer can escape these pitfalls and become authentic. One could well start or end each day with one of these." --Harvey Cox, Professor of Divinity, Harvard University; Author of Fire from Heaven "This is a revealing, intensely personal, and wonderful book of prayers, rich and insightful. Loder helps us to stretch our experiences, our emotions, and our imaginations just a little bit more." --Rev. William H. Gray, III, Senior Pastor, Bright Hope Baptist Church; President/CEO, United Negro College Fund "Loder is a modern-day psalmist whose prayers are disarmingly honest and refreshingly real. His message: in all of life's beauty and brokenness love is the struggle that tutors the soul." --Julie Neraas, Presbyterian minister, Spiritual Director, and Faculty Member, Hamline University, St. Paul, Minnesota "Loder offers thoughtful and well-crafted prayers that are written in the familiar cadence of everyday language but leavened with echoes of the inspired awe, wonder, and praise of the ancient Scriptures." --Dr. Bob Edgar, General Secretary, National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; former Congressman from Pennsylvania "Ted Loder is a master pastor. In these prayers we see a pastor bringing his people before the throne of God. Good reading. Good praying." --Dr. William H. Willimon, Dean of the Chapel and Professor of Christian Ministry, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina
Download or read book The Song of My Heart written by Nora Agaronian and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2015-03-19 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inspirational book is for those who love nature and gardening; and for those who enjoy listening to the beautiful songs of the birds. My garden is a symbol of love for my parents and the legacy they left for my family and me. For me, the garden conveys a connection with nature and my childhood. I have unforgettable memories. It also symbolizes my love for my parents and appreciation for the legacy they left behind. They are with me in my glorious garden all the time. Our home in Armenia was adorned with beautiful flowers that glowed and glittered under the golden beams of the sun. So is my garden, in a secret corner of my Los Angeles backyard. This book also refers to the mother-daughter relationship. With both sweet and sorrowful tears, I dedicated this book to my dearest daughter, Anoush. Knowing her own family story, Anoush would know where she came from and where she is heading. My book also embraces those who immigrated to the United States from other countries. It is about parents, grandparents, children, and grandchildren. It is about five generations living together in the twenty-first century in harmony. It is an interesting, exciting, and fulfilling opportunity for each generation to live together and learn from each other. It speaks of family relationships mainly concentrates on mother-daughter and father-daughter relationships. The family legacy continues in those families where relationships are clear and clean, there is mutual respect for each other, and positive approaches are used to deal with family issues. In these families, nobody is alone. They solve their problems together. It pulls in precepts from educators as well. It clearly shows how the community and schools effect our childrens development.
