Book excerpt: Meet Bror Telemann. 42 years old. Husband to Nina Telemann. Father to Heidi, Berthold and Sabine. Currently: stage director at the Norwegian National Theatre. Soon to be: world-famous playwright and general talking head. Now he's on holiday with his family at the foot of the Alps, south of Munich. That's in Germany. Nina loves Germany. Telemann does not. Telemann loves Nigella Lawson. Ahem... he loves the theatre. That's better. So, whilst his wife and children frolic in the dusky sunshine with lederhosen-sporting, schnitzel-scoffing locals, Telemann prefers to spend his time thinking about theatre... except when his mind wanders... again. Subversive and original, this is the 2009 Norwegian bestseller from the deliciously dark mind of Erlend Loe.

Download or read book Chemistry and Biochemistry of Oxygen Therapeutics written by Andrea Mozzarelli and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-13 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human blood performs many important functions including defence against disease and transport of biomolecules, but perhaps the most important is to carry oxygen – the fundamental biochemical fuel - and other blood gases around the cardiovascular system. Traditional therapies for the impairment of this function, or the rapid replacement of lost blood, have centred around blood transfusions. However scientists are developing chemicals (oxygen therapeutics, or “blood substitutes”) which have the same oxygen-carrying capability as blood and can be used as replacements for blood transfusion or to treat diseases where oxygen transport is impaired. Chemistry and Biochemistry of Oxygen Therapeutics: From Transfusion to Artificial Blood links the underlying biochemical principles of the field with chemical and biotechnological innovations and pre-clinical development. The first part of the book deals with the chemistry, biochemistry, physiology and toxicity of oxygen, including chapters on hemoglobin reactivity and regulation; the major cellular and physiological control mechanisms of blood flow and oxygen delivery; hemoglobin and myoglobin; nitric oxide and oxygen; and the role of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in ischemia/reperfusion Injury. The book then discusses medical needs for oxygen supply, including acute traumatic hemorrhage and anemia; diagnosis and treatment of haemorrhages in "non-surgical" patients; management of perioperative bleeding; oxygenation in the preterm neonate; ischemia normobaric and hyperbaric oxygen therapy for ischemic stroke and other neurological conditions; and transfusion therapy in β thalassemia and sickle cell disease Finally “old”and new strategies for oxygen supply are described. These include the political, administrative and logistic issues surrounding transfusion; conscientious objection in patient blood management; causes and consequences of red cell incompatibility; biochemistry of red blood cell storage; proteomic investigations on stored red blood cells; red blood cells from stem cells; the universal red blood cell; allosteric effectors of hemoglobin; hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers; oxygen delivery by natural and artificial oxygen carriers; cross-linked and polymerized hemoglobins as potential blood substitutes; design of novel pegylated hemoglobins as oxygen carrying plasma expanders; hb octamers by introduction of surface cysteines; hemoglobin-vesicles as a cellular type hemoglobin-based oxygen carrier; animal models and oxidative biomarkers to evaluate pre-clinical safety of extracellular hemoglobins; and academia – industry collaboration in blood substitute development. Chemistry and Biochemistry of Oxygen Therapeutics: From Transfusion to Artificial Blood is an essential reference for clinicians, haematologists, medicinal chemists, biochemists, molecular biologists, biotechnologists and blood substitute researchers.
Download or read book Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Vitamin B6 and Pqq Dependent Proteins written by Ana Iriarte and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first international meeting on Vitamin B6 involvement in catalysis took place in 1962, there have been periodic meetings every three or four years. In 1990, scientists studying another cofactor, PQQ, which had already attracted the scientific community's interest for its possible involvement in amino acid decarboxylation and reactions involving amino groups, joined forces with those investigating pyridoxal phosphate-dependent enzymes. Since then, the international PQQ/quinoproteins meetings have been held jointly. In the years following the original meeting 37 years ago in Rome, Italy, the scientific gatherings have taken place in Moscow, Russia (1966); Nagoya, Japan (1967); Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Russia (1974); Toronto, Canada (1979); Athens, Greece (1983); Turku, Finland (1987); Osaka, Japan (1990); and Capri, Italy (1996). For the first time in the history of these symposia, the international meeting was held in the United States, from October 31 through November 5, 1999, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The scientific program focus shifted significantly beyond the original emphasis on catalysis to aspects such as cellular and genetic regulation of events involving proteins that require pyridoxal phosphate or quinoproteins. The growing awareness of the involvement of these proteins in biotechnology processes and fundamental physiological events, as well as their implication in diseases, was also represented, with emphasis on the molecular basis of these events. The meeting was symposium S278, sponsored by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB).

Download or read book Enzymes Dependent on Pyridoxal Phosphate and Other Carbonyl Compounds as Cofactors written by T. Fukui and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a summary of the proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Vitamin B6 and Carbonyl Catalysis, held in Osaka, Japan, 15-19 October 1990. The development of molecular biology and x-ray crystallography techniques have contributed greatly to the knowledge and understanding of PLP-dependent enzymes. The structural, mechanistic and functional aspects of the PLP-dependent enzymes have been studied for over 40 years by many active researchers. Recent evidence indicates that the coenzyme is substituted by the pyruvoyl group which is a reactive carbonyl in some amino acid decarboxylases, and the presence of pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), another carbonyl coenzyme, in other enzymes. The contents of this volume attest to the exciting progress in elucidating structure, mechanism of action, and the function of enzymes dependent on coenzymes containing the carbonyl group.

Book excerpt: Every day, all over the country, teenagers struggle with the realities of bullying. Tormented, ridiculed, and beaten—simply for being who they are—these teens face alienation, humiliation, and even the explicit assertion that they have somehow brought this upon themselves, that they should just blend in. Bullied is a series of short stories exploring the world of these teens from several different viewpoints: the victim, the bully, the gay bystander, the straight friend, the concerned parent. Closeted Bryan wonders why Christian Michaelson doesn't just try to blend in if he hates being bullied so much. Star athlete David isn't a homophobe—after all, he's not afraid of anything. Jonathan, a Christian fundamentalist, must weigh the Bible against peer pressure and what he knows is right when he discovers his childhood friend is gay. Bully victim Chase Devereaux finds an unexpected ally in a brave fellow student. A single mom struggles to accept the reality that her only son is gay. Two tough gay teens are forced to confront their own inner demons when tragedy befalls a classmate they failed to help. And overweight Kirby finds the strength of character to make a friend, which leads to a lifestyle change and a chance at love. Each character grows as an individual as he or she comes to terms with what it means to be a gay teenager in America.

Download or read book The History of the Nude written by Flaminio Gualdoni and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A richly illustrated and extremely enjoyable reference book on the historical evolution of the nude. From the Paleolithic "great mothers" to the Greek athletes, from the Venus of Urbino by Titian to Leonardo's Vitruvian Man, from the Odalisque by Boucher to those by Ingres, to the Amazons of Helmut Newton and the desolate, lifeless bodies of Andres Serrano, the nude is the theme of artistic representation par excellence. The nude body as the incarnation of perfect beauty and the suspicions concerning its sensuality imposed by Christian culture; the renewed triumph of ancient beauty in the Renaissance and the study of anatomy; the visual licentiousness of the eighteenth century and the photographic nude; ideal beauty, eroticism, pornography; the nude also as representation of the ugly and its flaunted truthfulness in the art of the twentieth century; the nude that itself becomes a work of art in the avant-garde of the post-WWII period, with performance, body art and experimental theater. These threads of the narration make for a deeply informative historical exploration of the nude in Western art, all conducted around a rich apparatus of images.

Book excerpt: *** Reduced from $210.00 while stocks last *** Starting in the late 1960s but especially in the 70s, the most innovative Italian coachbuilders from Bertone to Pininfarina followed a radical design path. With fantastical wedge-shaped speedsters, their goal was nothing less than reimagining the car. Many of their ideas--as reflected in the concept vehicles in this book--ended up on the scrap heap of design history, while other concepts have remained influential up to the present. Rainer W. Schlegelmilch, best known for his spectacular Formula 1 photography, captured all of this 70s explosion of automotive creativity with his unique photographic eye. With his artful staging, the angular concept car silhouettes took on the curvy and alluring forms of models. Through these futuristic design concepts from the 70s, we get even closer to the spirit of that decade--one that continues to hold us in its thrall. Text in English, German and French SELLING POINTS: *Contains all important background information on the cars featured: how they came about and what became of them ILLUSTRATIONS: 180 colour photographs
