This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial History of the First Baptist Church, 1813-1913 Among those noble men of the wilderness, one of the most noted was Elder David Irish, who preached the first gospel sermon in Cayuga County in 1794. He was born in Dutchess County in 1757 and died in Fleming in 1815. He removed with his family to Scipio in 1794. At that time the great section of our state west and southwest of Oneida and Madison Counties was an almost unbroken wilderness. Elder Irish was the first minister of the gos pel who raised the standard of the cross and preached salva tion by grace to the destitute population of this region. He was instrumental in founding some ten churches in as many settlements and baptized during his ministry persons. He had fortitude and perseverance well-nigh Paul ine. In 1799, being called with some of his brethren of the church in Scipio to assist in organizing a church in Phelps town, Western Hill, the roads at that time being wholly impassable for travel or horseback by reason of the great depth of mud and snow, he encouraged his brethren to under take to go on foot a distance of thirty miles, when all but one accompanied. These infant churches, struggling in the environment of pioneer settlements, rejoiced in their liberty as is evident by the circular of the Cayuga association which met at Palmyra in 1804: We have not to contend with civil rulers for equal rights, nor are we harassed by the civil officer and dragged to prison, or our hard-earned subsistence torn from us under the authority of human law, to feed a voracious and over bearing clergy, established by law and supported by the secular arm. Those dark times of superstition, bigotry and oppression, are to us, in some measure, over, and the bright mom of equal rights dawns upon us. The sun bf righteous. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial of the First Baptist Church: Sedgwick, Maine June 11-18, 1905 The next year Gorges, a man whose explorations to America were to the Maine coast, equipped two ships for these shores. He took with him sixteen colonists with directions to establish a settlement on some favorable point which he might select. Other colonial companies were sent out. By 1620 ships were visiting the Maine waters from Monhegan to Machias. It is probable that during the year 1623, when the Pilgrims at Plymouth were subduing the forest primeval, individuals commenced a permanent residence upon Arrowsic Island, near the mouth of the Sagadahoc: and upon the mainland, at the entrance of the river at Sheepscot, at Damariscotta, at Pemaquid and at St. George's River. Seven years after this, it was reported that eighty-four families, besides fishermen, were residing along the coast in this region. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Centennial of the First Baptist Church in Paris, Maine: Observed October 1st, 1891 If now we had a letter, or a diary, written by some one of those engaged in that work. And telling something, even if not much, about it, we should deem it almost priceless. Something of this kind we have in a faded but still legible manuscript from the pen of Elder Hooper. It is dated, May the 30 day It is not a letter though, nor a diary. It is a part of Elder Hooper's Dedication Sermon. It contains the Introduction, and the first and part of the second divisions of the discourse. It ends abruptly in the middle of a sentence of the second division, the following pages having in some way become separated from these and lost. The Introduction precedes, instead of followingtthe announcement of the text, thus having the place recently given to it by German preachers, instead of that which it has in English and American sermons. In it Elder Hooper spoke of the great changes made in Paris in the twenty-four years passed between the coming of the first settlers and the time when he was speaking; of the state of things then existing; of the movement which resulted in building the meeting-house; and of the raising of the house, which was a work of difliculty and danger, which those of the present generation, who have never seen such structures raised, and raised without the appliances and helps of modern art and machinery, - can hardly realize. Elder Hooper said In the year 1780 the first settlers came into this Town, the[n] called No. 4, the plase being then entirely new and no roads.
