Book excerpt: The field of sport history is a relatively new research domain, situated at the intersection of a number of disciplines and sub-disciplines. This interdisciplinarity has created interesting avenues for growth and fresh thinking but also inherent problems of coherence and identity. Making Sport History examines the development of an academic community around sport history, exploring the roots of the discipline, its current boundaries, borders and challenges, and looking ahead at future prospects. Written by a team of world-leading sport historians, with commentaries from scholars working outside of the sport historical mainstream, the book considers key themes in the historiography of sport, including: The relationship between history, sport studies and physical education Comparative analysis of the role of historians in the writing of sport history Modern and post-modern approaches to sport history Race, gender and the sport historical establishment The role of scholarly organisations, conferences and journals in discipline-building Presenting new perspectives on what constitutes sport history and its core methodologies, the book helps explain why historians have become interested in sport, why they’ve chosen the topics they have, and how their work has influenced the wider world of history and been influenced by it. Making Sport History is essential reading for any advanced student, scholar or researcher with an interest in sport history, historiography, or the history and philosophy of the social sciences.

Book Architecture in Indianapolis

Download or read book Architecture in Indianapolis written by James A. Glass and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a planned community, Indianapolis boasted finished frame and brick buildings from its beginning. Architects and builders drew on Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, French Second Empire, Gothic, Romanesque, and Italian Renaissance styles for commercial, industrial, public, and religious buildings and for residences. In Architecture in Indianapolis: 1820–1900, preservationist and architectural historian Dr. James Glass explores the rich variety of architecture that appeared during the city's first 80 years, to 1900. Glass explains how economic forces shaped building cycles, such as the Canal Era, the advent of railroads, the natural gas boom, and repeated recessions and recoveries. He describes 243 buildings that illustrate the styles that architects and builders incorporated into the designs that they devised in each era between 1820 and 1900. This book also documents the loss of distinctive 19th century architecture that has occurred in Indianapolis. It includes 373 photographs and drawings that depict the buildings described and locator maps that show where concentrations of buildings were constructed. Architecture in Indianapolis: 1820–1900 provides the first history of 19th-century architecture in the city and will serve as an indispensable reference for decades to come.

Book Historical Discourse on Occasion of the Centennial Anniversary of the Reformed Dutch Church of Millstone Classic Reprint

Download or read book Historical Discourse on Occasion of the Centennial Anniversary of the Reformed Dutch Church of Millstone Classic Reprint written by Edward Tanjore Corwin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Discourse on Occasion of the Centennial Anniversary of the Reformed Dutch Church of Millstone The Reformed Dutch Church of Hillsborough, at Milletone, celebrated her centennial anniversary on Saturday, August 11th, 1866. The following Historical Discourse was delivered by the pastor, on the morning of that day, in connection with appropriate religious exercises. On motion of Hon, A. O. Zabriskie, its publication was called for, with the request that notes and appendices be added. The writer has accordingly given it to the public, hoping that thereby, the memory of early times may be preserved, and also, (which is more important, ) that by a proper appreciation of the past, Israel may understand what she ought to do in the future. Having noticed shortly after his settlement at Millstone, that the church was rapidly completing her first century, he directed his attention, as time permitted, to her history, and in the course of a couple of years, the within material collected in his hands.
