Book Beyond the Morning Star

Download or read book Beyond the Morning Star written by A. Russell McGillivray and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-09-08 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My father often told me stories of my grandfather, Reverend (Rev.) Russell McGillivray, who died when I was three years old. The generation who heard Rev. McGillivray preach recalled the power of his voice and the simplicity of his messages. A testimony to the quality of his life was the people who were welcoming to our family because of our connection to the man who was their minister some 30 or 40 years earlier. As a family historian, I had many questions about Rev. McGillivray. He left school at 11 and worked full-time to support his widowed mother and six younger siblings. How was he later able to earn two university degrees and become a Presbyterian minister? In poor health as a teenager in Hamilton, Ontario, he was sent to British Columbia for a year to recover. There he received his calling to the ministry and started preaching. How, when and where did this remarkable transformation happen? As a minister during Church Union in 1925-26, Rev. McGillivray got caught up in the sometimes bitter division and legal wrangling that ensued. What was his part in this story? During World War II, he was the minister of one of the largest United churches in Canada. In 1947 a rift between him and the overseeing body (Presbytery) prompted him to resign, leaving my 21-year-old father disillusioned with the institutional church for the rest of his life. What were the issues? Above all, as a Christian, I wanted to know what my grandfather believed and preached. In my journey to a published book, providential events encouraged me to keep going. The most exciting was discovering Rev. McGillivray’s own account of the improbable year in B.C. that changed his life. His writing brings alive a long-gone era with candour, sensitivity, wit, and nostalgia. He was not successful in getting the stories published then, but I am grateful to be able to honour him by sharing them here.

Book Sauerkraut Suspenders and the Swiss

Download or read book Sauerkraut Suspenders and the Swiss written by Duane H. Freitag and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2012-04-18 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first Cheese Day in 1874 to the Great Limburger War of 1935, author Duane H. Freitag peers into the nooks and crannies of the tumultuous political history of Green County, Wisconsin. In this previously untold story, Freitag pulls back the curtain to uncover how the Swiss immigrants who settled in southern Wisconsin influenced Green County politics from 1845 to 1945. Buffeted by wars, dairy industry economics, murders, epidemics, the temperance movement, and LaFollette progressivism, this immigrant group was heavily involved in each major election, asserting their political will in candidates and through the polls. In addition to exploring the politics of the region, Freitag also discusses what caused shifts in Wisconsins political winds throughout this period by placing Green County elections against the larger context of political landscape of the United States as a whole. In doing so, he examines the history of America and demonstrates how Swiss immigrants and other Wisconsin cultural groups responded to the events that shaped the nation. From the abolition of slavery to prohibition, the Great Depression, and concerns about Americas involvement in two world wars, Sauerkraut, Suspenders, and the Swiss demonstrates the remarkable story of Wisconsinand Americanpolitics.

Book The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders

Download or read book The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders written by Lawrence N. Crumb and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-03-20 with total page 937 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Movement began in the Church of England in 1833 and extended to the rest of the Anglican Communion, influencing other denominations as well. It was an attempt to remind the church of its divine authority, independent of the state, and to recall it to its Catholic heritage deriving from the ancient and medieval periods, as well as the Caroline Divines of 17th-century England. The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders is a comprehensive bibliography of books, pamphlets, chapters in books, periodical articles, manuscripts, microforms, and tape recordings dealing with the Movement and its influence on art, literature, and music, as well as theology; authors include scholars in these fields, as well as the fields of history, political science, and the natural sciences. The first edition of The Oxford Movement and Its Leaders and its supplement contained comprehensive coverage through 1983 and 1990, respectively. The Second Edition, with over 8,000 citations covering many languages, extends coverage through 2001; it also includes many earlier items not previously listed, corrections and additions to earlier items, and a listing of electronic sources.
