Pacific remonstrances were answered by defiance, and followed by more arbitrary exactions. The seizure of the stamps, the destruction of the teas, the resolutions to consume home products, were re garded as acts of rebellion, to be crushed out by military force. Boston was heavily garrisoned, and coercive, mili tary aggression was threatened. Delegates from the colonies were assembled in Congress to deliberate upon the proper course to be pursued. The delegates, and the people of the colonies, yet hoped for a redress of their grievances, and scarcely contemplated separation from, and independence of.
