Download or read book The Centenary Companion to Australian Federation written by Helen Irving and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-12-06 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published to mark the centenary of Federation, this important book explores Australia's national origins in a comprehensive and accessible way. A high-calibre team of writers has been gathered to write the first ever comprehensive, general history of Federation. Starting from the perspective of the individual colonies as they made their way towards membership of the Australian Commonwealth in 1901, the book also provides cross-referenced short alphabetical entries covering key events, people and concepts. It approaches Federation not simply as a formal political story, but as a social and cultural process, maintaining the relevance of nation-making by highlighting ongoing debates about democracy, sovereignty and progressive citizenry. A major contribution to the Centenary of Federation, this book should become a standard reference for scholars, students and general readers in the continuing discussions of Australia's future as a nation.

Book excerpt: Robert Hannaford is one of Australia's foremost portrait artists, but this is only one aspect of his work. ROBERT HANNAFORD: NATURAL EYE, the first book to be published on this acclaimed artist, reveals a richer, fuller story: of an artist who deliberately places representation over abstraction, producing art that celebrates the visual world in all its variety while interrogating its place in the human imagination. Hannaford has been a finalist in every Archibald Prize exhibition since 1991, and winner of the Archibald People's Choice Prize on three occasions. His subjects include Dame Joan Sutherland, Sir Donald Bradman, Sir Edward Woodwards, Hon. Paul Keating, Jean Blackburn, Hon. Bob Hawke, Sir Gerard Brennen, Professor Rolf Prince and Hugh Stretton.
Download or read book Tourism in National Capitals and Global Change written by Robert Maitland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-10-14 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time of increasing city competition, national capitals are at the forefront of efforts to gain competitive advantage for themselves and their nation, to project a distinctive and positive image and to score well in global city league tables. They are frequently their country’s main tourist gateway, and their success in attracting visitors is inextricably linked with that of the nation. They attract not just leisure visitors; they are especially important in other growing tourism markets, for example, as centres of power they feature strongly in business tourism, as academic centres they are important for educational tourism, and they frequently host global events such as the Olympic Games. And there are more of them: first, the number of capitals has grown as the number of nation-states has increased and, secondly, pressures for devolution mean more cities are seeking national capital status, even when they are not at the head of independent states. We need to understand tourism in capitals better – but there has been little research in the past. This book develops new insights as it explores the phenomenon of capital city tourism, and uses recent research to examine the appeal of ‘capitalness’ to tourists, and explore developments in capitals across the world. This book was published as a special issue of Current Issues in Tourism.

Download or read book Education for Social Citizenship written by W.O. Lee and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2005-03-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, emerging from a cross-national study of teachers' perception of good citizenship, addresses two fundamental questions: What do teachers see as important in citizenship education? How do these perceptions facilitate or hinder the preparation of good citizens? While providing rich and useful data on the latest developments of citizenship education in various contexts, this book also offers an all-round review of concepts and arguments on the subject, as well as insightful comparative analyses of the findings emerged from the case studies. One encouraging conclusion drawn from these studies is that teachers across nations share similar goals and objectives that seem to have transcended cultural and political boundaries.

Download or read book Commemorative Events written by Warwick Frost and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commemorative Events emphasise remembering. They are held on the anniversaries of significant past events, either annually or after significant time periods. Commemorative events provide fascinating insight into how societies see themselves, their heritage and their identity. These events however carry high propensity for controversy as memory and identity are highly subjective and other stakeholders hold different views of what should be commemorated and why. This is the first book to provide an in - depth critical examination of commemorative events, particularly what they mean to societies and how they are used by governments as well as impacts on other stakeholders. The book fully explores these issues by reviewing all the major types of commemorative events including, nationhood or independence, wars, battles, famous people and cultural milestones from varying geographical regions and stakeholder perspectives. By doing so the book furthers understanding of these types of events in society as well as furthering knowledge of social and political uses and impacts of events. This thought provoking volume will be valuable reading for students, researchers and academics interested in events.
