Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many, the terms aging, maturation and senescence are synonymous and used interchangeably, but they should not be. Whereas senescence represents an endogenously controlled degenerative programme leading to plant or organ death, genetiC aging encompasses a wide array of passive degenerative genetiC processes driven primarily by exogenous factors (Leopold, 1975). Aging is therefore considered a consequence of genetiC lesions that accumulate over time, but by themselves do not necessarily cause death. These lesions are probably made more severe by the increase in size and complexity in trees and their attendant physiology. Thus while the withering of flower petals following pollination can be considered senescence, the loss of viability of stored seeds more clearly represents aging (Norden, 1988). The very recent book "Senescence and Aging in Plants" does not discuss trees, the most dominant group of plants on the earth. Yet both angiospermic and gymnospermic trees also undergo the above phenomena but less is known about them. Do woody plants senesce or do they just age? What is phase change? Is this synonymous with maturation? While it is now becoming recognized that there is no programmed senescence in trees, senescence of their parts, even in gymnosperms (e. g. , needles of temperate conifers las t an average of 3. 5 years), is common; but aging is a readily acknowledged phenomenon. In theory, at least, in the absence of any programmed senescence trees should -live forever, but in practice they do not.

As this meeting attracted many investigators involved in cyclic nucleotides and calcium role in intracellular regulation, it was thought that this opportunity could be used to organize, prior to the Congress, an in-depth introductory course on the subject. This was carried out as a NATO Advanced Study Institute. The participants included Ph. D. students and M. D. s engaged in a research training, but also fully trained and well known researchers who wanted a refresher course on the whole subject. During the course, most of the participants and lecturers asked to be provided with a text summarizing the basic lectures of the course. This book was therefore conceived as a basic textbook on the regulation and action of intracellular signal molecules, concentrating mainly on cyclic nucleotides and calcium. It was deliberately kept at a basic level. We would therefore be happy if it could be used as an introduction for interested M. D. s or Ph. D. s working in other fields or entering this field and as a general refresher for researchers interested in the subject. For this reason, very general schemes have been asked of the authors, along with reading lists of available reviews rather than extensive bibliographies. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Light as Energy Source and Information Carrier in Plant Photo physiology" was held at Volterra, Italy, from September 26 to October 6, 1994, in order to consider the fundamental role that light plays in plant growth and development. This book summarises the main lectures given at this meeting which concentrated on both photochemical energy conversion and signalling (photosensing) aspects. Light harvesting and conversion into chemical energy in photosynthesis occurs at the level of chlorophyll/carotenoid containing photosystems in plants. Pigments are non covalently bound to a variety of polypeptides which serve as a specific scaffolding, necessary to determine the energy coupling between pigments and thus allowing rapid excitation energy trasfer from the antenna to the special reaction centre chlorophylls. Data from transient, time resolved spectroscopies, in the femtosecond and picosecond domain, together with model calculations, suggest that this process occurs in the 20-100 picosecond time span. The special ~ll u~ture of reaction centre complexes, ensures rapid primary charge separation, probably in the order of 1-3 picoseconds, with subsequent charge stabilisation reactions proceeding in the hundreds of picoseconds range. The recently resolved crystallographic structure of LHCII, the principal antenna complex of plants, allows precise determination of pigment-pigment distances and thus permits calculation of approximate chlorophyll-chlorophyll Forster hopping rates, which are in good agreement with time resolved measurements.

Book excerpt: This book is based on the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on "Mesenchymal-Epithelial Interactions in Neural Development" which was held in Berlin during March 1986. The idea that it may be the time for this workshop arose from a discussion among the organizers who met at a conference in Innsbruck. During the twenties, Spemann demonstrated that, in vertebrates, the formation of neuroepithelium depends on the induction by specific mesodermal derivatives. This was about the first time that mesenchymal-epithelial interactions had been recognized as an important mechanism in the development of an epithelial organ. Since then two things had become clear: 1) The identity and role of molecules, elaborated at mesenchymal-neuroepithelial interfaces had been partially elucidated in spinal cord and peripheral nerve ontogeny but, until recently, had been ignored in studies on the development of the brain. 2) In many-non-neural epithelia, the surrounding mesenchyme regulates such fundamental developmental steps as, for example, cell proliferation, morphogenesis and cell differentia tion, and there is no reason to exclude similar influences and interactions from brain development. It seemed to us that the importance and implications of many of these findings had not been appreciated by many developmental neurobiologists and that an attempt should be made to initiate discussions and exchange of ideas among different groups of scientists involved in extracellular matrix (ECM) research. This turned out to be a formidable task because of the great diversity of disciplines contributing findings to this active field.
