Book excerpt: Cell Synchrony: Studies in Biosynthetic Regulation focuses on the processes, principles, applications, methodologies, and approaches involved in biosynthetic regulation, including chromosome replication, cellular biosynthesis, and enzyme synthesis. The selection first takes a look at the theory of synchronous cultures, synchronous replication of the chromosome in Bacillus subtilis, and chromosome replication in Escherichia coli. Discussions focus on attempts to characterize the physical state of replicating DNA, cell division and the regulation of chromosome replication, regulation of sequential chromosome synthesis, synchrony of chromosome replication, and determination of the cell doubling-time distribution function from the decay of synchronization. The text then examines nuclear events in synchronously dividing yeast cultures, periodic enzyme synthesis in synchronous cultures of yeast, and light-induced synchronous sporulation of a myxomycete. Topics include periodicity of enzyme synthesis, use of synchronous cultures for studying cellular biosynthesis, and cytological observations on synchronously dividing cultures. The book explores the effects of temperature on the mitotic cycle of normal and synchronized mammalian cells; behavior of sulfhydryl groups in synchronous division; and morphogenetic and macromolecular aspects of synchronized Tetrahymena. The selection is highly recommended for researchers interested in biosynthetic regulation.

Book Normal and Malignant Cell Growth

Download or read book Normal and Malignant Cell Growth written by R.J. Fry and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the Proceedings of the University of Chicago's third Cancer Training Grant supported Teaching Symposium. This Symposium received much of its support from grant number T12 CA 08077-02. Most of the planning of the Symposium and most of the local editing of the Proceedings was carried out by Dr. R. J. Michael Fry of the A.E.C. Argonne National Laboratory and by two members of the Advisory Committee of the Cancer Training Grant, Drs. Melvin Griem and Werner Kirsten. They carried the main responsibility for the Symposium. The subject of the Symposium, "Normal and Malignant Cell Growth," was chosen because, as the Proceedings reflect, it is a rapidly advancing field of endeavor which is of utmost importance to the understanding of the processes of malignant neoplasia. In fact, there is increasing evidence that knowledge of the kinetics of the cancer cell will greatly influence approaches to cancer therapy. Like the first two of these Teaching Symposia held in 1964 and 1966, this one attracted about 400 students and staff from this medical institution as well as from other medical centers in the Chicago area. The effective interplay of an excellent group of scientists with a lively and responsive audience was evident as they considered together a topic of great current interest in the field of neoplasia. Much of the credit for the smooth organization and implementation of the Symposium must go to Mrs.

Book Cell Cycle Checkpoint Control Protocols

Download or read book Cell Cycle Checkpoint Control Protocols written by Howard B. Lieberman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-02 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of cell cycle regulation is based on the observation that the life cycle of a cell progresses through several distinct phases, G1, M, S, and G2, occurring in a well-defined temporal order. Details of the mechanisms involved are rapidly emerging and appear extraordinarily complex. Furthermore, not only is the order of the phases important, but in normal eukaryotic cells one phase will not begin unless the prior phase is completed successfully. Che- point control mechanisms are essentially surveillance systems that monitor the events in each phase, and assure that the cell does not progress prematurely to the next phase. If conditions are such that the cell is not ready to progress—for example, because of incomplete DNA replication in S or DNA damage that may interfere with chromosome segregation in M—a transient delay in cell cycle progression will occur. Once the inducing event is properly handled— for example, DNA replication is no longer blocked or damaged DNA is repaired—cell cycle progression continues. Checkpoint controls have recently been the focus of intense study by investigators interested in mechanisms that regulate the cell cycle. Furthermore, the relationship between checkpoint c- trol and carcinogenesis has additionally enhanced interest in these cell cycle regulatory pathways. It is clear that cancer cells often lack these checkpoints and exhibit genomic instability as a result. Moreover, several tumor suppressor genes participate in checkpoint control, and alterations in these genes are as- ciated with genomic instability as well as the development of cancer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Cell Biology has been initiated as a continuing, multi-volume series to report on the progress of a wide spectrum of problems of cell structure and cell function. Jn arranging these volumes individual contributors are asked not only to review the major new information, but especially to present the state of a given problem or area by discussing the current central issues, speculations, concepts, hypotheses, and technical problems. We intend, in addition, that these volumes will not be concerned with comprehensive reviews of the recent literature but will consist rather of presentations of an interpretive and integrative nature, based on selection of major research advances. It is our aim that these volumes should provide the means whereby cell biologists may keep themselves reasonably well informed about the current progress in research areas in cell biology in which they are not immediately or directly involved themselves. The articles, nevertheless, are expected to bring into focus the experimental objectives of the specialists in a given research area. D. M.P. L. G. E.M. vii Contents Contributors v Preface vii 1 1. Book Techniques in Cell Cycle Analysis

Download or read book Techniques in Cell Cycle Analysis written by Joe W. Gray and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-24 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantification of the proliferative characteristics of normal and malignant cells has been of interest to oncolo gists and cancer biologists for almost three decades. This interest stems from (a) the fact that cancer is a disease of uncontrolled proliferation, (b) the finding that many of the commonly used anticancer agents are preferentially toxic to cells that are actively proliferating, and (c) the observa tion that significant differences in proliferation characteristics exist between normal and malignant cells. Initially, cell cycle analysis was pursued enthusiastically in the hope of gener ating information useful for the development of rational cancer therapy strategies; for example, by allowing identi fication of rapidly proliferating tumors against which cell cycle-specific agents could be used with maximum effec tiveness and by allowing rational scheduling of cell cyc- specific therapeutic agents to maximize the therapeutic ratio. Unfortunately, several difficulties have prevented realiza tion of the early promise of cell cycle analysis: Proliferative patterns of the normal and malignant tissues have been found to be substantially more complex than originally an ticipated, and synchronization of human tumors has proved remarkably difficult. Human tumors of the same type have proved highly variable, and the cytokinetic tools available for cell cycle analysis have been labor intensive, as well as somewhat subjective and in many cases inapplicable to humans. However, the potential for substantially improved cancer therapy remains if more accurate cytokinetic infor mation about human malignancies and normal tissues can be obtained in a timely fashion.

Book Cell Culture and Its Application

Download or read book Cell Culture and Its Application written by Ronald Acton and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 771 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cell Culture and Its Application covers the proceedings of the First International Cell Culture Congress Symposium, which focuses on how cell culture technology could impact on cell biology. The symposium aims to establish facilities for the cultivation of mammalian cells, which in turn would hopefully enhance basic cell biology research. The book is organized into four symposium and workshop sessions, encompassing 45 chapters. The opening chapter recognizes the interlocking relationship of cell culture technology and substantive cell biology. Chapters 2-5 describe the biochemical events that mark the cell cycle, with emphasis on occurrence of histone phosphorylation at each cycle. A discussion on cell differentiation, as a phenomena of interacting, inductive, and inhomogeneous cell populations, is included in these chapters. The second symposium session deals with signs of a revolution in progress in cell culture technology. This includes impact of tissue culture in physiological research course and in understanding of integrated physiology. The last two symposium sessions cover the large-scale production of virus from tissue cultures for cell antigens. An approach to the study of aging using diploid human cells in culture as a model system is also presented. It involves isolation and characterization of HLA antigens from cultured cells and their contribution to the study of disease. A brief discussion on mycoplasma contamination, microplasma-cell-virus interaction, and advantages and limitations of direct and indirect culture for primary isolation and detection of mycoplasma contamination is provided. The book then proceeds by discussing cell differentiation of specific cell or organ, such as testis, sensory cell, hepatocyte, embryonic muscle cell, and brain cortex. The concluding chapters cover nutritional requirements for cell growth, defined culture media for specific cell type, issues and problems related to large-scale cell production, and quality control. Cell biologists and researchers will find this book invaluable.
