Book excerpt: The use of Rhizobium inoculants for legumes is restricted by the poor nodulation competitiveness of many inoculant strains. In soil with high indiginous populations of bacteria that can nodulate a given host, the inoculant strains may be found in few or none of the nodules. This presents a problem when the indigenous strains fix little or no nitrogen and therefore do not provide a benefit to host. A strain of Rhizobium is a successful competitor when its representation in the nodules is greater than its representation in the inoculum. To determine whetherthe surface plays a role in nodulation competitiveness of Rhizobium leguminosarum bv.phaseoli (Rlp), I performed an extensive search and analysis of transposon-insertion mutants with altered cell surfaces derived from two nonisogenic parental strains of Rlp, KIM5s and CE3. I isolated and characterized one mutant of CE3, designated CE3003, with a domed colony morphology and a highly hydrophobic cell surface. On bean plants CE3003 was as efficient as CE3 in nodulation and acetylene reduction. The parent and the mutant grew at similar rates when they were each grown in rich culture medium or when inoculated singly onto bean seeds. However, when they were mixed at a 1:1 ratio and applied to seeds, the population of the mutant was 14-fold lower than the population of CE3 on bean roots five days after inoculation. Although all previous meetings were well attended, the present conference was the largest so far. 550 scien tists from 60 different countries attended the "Leeuwenhorst Conference", re presenting the many different disciplines actively involved in research in this field: chemists, biochemists, molecular biologists, geneticists, microbiologists, plant physiologists, agriculturalists. A large number of them had to go through a difficult period to raise the necessary funds to attend. In addition, a parallel meeting of "policymakers" from Southeast Asia, Africa and South America was held under the auspices of Crosscurrents International Institute, Dayton, OR, USA and the United Nations University, Tokyo, Japan. These participants attended some of the scientific sessions to benefit from the vision of a number of scientists at the symposium.

Among plants sensitive to iron deficiency are apples, avocado, bananas, barley, beans, citrus, cotton, grapes, peanuts, pecans, potatoes, sorghum, soybeans, and numerous ornamental plants. Deficiencies are usually recognized by chlorotic, in new leaves and are typically found among sensitive crops grown in calcareous or yellowed, interveinal areas soils which cover over 30% of the earth's land surface. Iron deficiency may lead, in extreme cases, to complete crop failure. In intensive agriculture on calcareous soils, iron often becomes a major limiting nutrient for optimal crop production, thus, correction of iron deficiency is required. Various chemicals and practices are available. They are, however, costly and do not always result in a complete remedy of the deficiency. Crucial questions relative to the cost-benefit equation such as the recovery rate of plants and the long-term fertilizing effect have not yet been resolved. The complexity of iron nutrition problems requires an understanding of the chemistry of iron oxides in soils, of the chemistry of both natural and synthetic chelates, of rhizosphere microbiology and biochemistry, and of the physiological involvement of the plant in iron uptake and transport.
