Book Molineux 300 Years

Download or read book Molineux 300 Years written by Alec Brew and published by Fonthill Media. This book was released on 2019-12-08 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For 300 Years the name Molineux has been indelibly linked with the town of Wolverhampton, known throughout the World as the home of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, but only for the last 130 of those years. Built in 1720 as one of the finest private homes in the town, with large formal gardens, Molineux became in turn a hotel with pleasure gardens and a home for major exhibitions, and cricket and boxing matches and the home of cycle racing in this country, but then the local football club moved in and began developing a stadium in which the Wolves won famous victories against top European teams in floodlit friendlies, and inspired the creation of the European Cup. After both the hotel and the team and stadium fell into the depths of decay, they eventually re-emerged as the home of the City's Archives, and a magnificent home for a re-energised team which brought back European football, and local pride.

Book Samuel Johnson After 300 Years

Download or read book Samuel Johnson After 300 Years written by Greg Clingham and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-05-28 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To mark the tercentenary of Samuel Johnson's birth in 2009, the specially-commissioned essays contained here review his scholarly reputation. An international team of experts reflects authoritatively on the various dimensions of literary, historical, critical and ethical life touched by Johnson's extraordinary achievement. The volume distinctively casts its net widely and combines consistently innovative thinking on Johnson's historical role with a fresh sense of present criticism. Chapters cover subjects as diverse as Johnson's moral philosophy, his legal thought, his influence on Jane Austen, and the question of the Johnson canon. The contributors examine the larger theoretical and scholarly contexts in which it is now possible to situate his work, and from which it may often be necessary to differentiate it. All the contributors have a distinguished record of scholarship in eighteenth-century studies, Johnson scholarship, and cultural history and theory.

Book Celebrations and Connections in Hispanic Literature

Download or read book Celebrations and Connections in Hispanic Literature written by Andrea Morris and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume Celebrations and Connections in Hispanic Literature is itself a celebration of a tradition of scholarly dialogue in a relaxed, festive atmosphere. The articles included here began as papers presented at the 25th Anniversary Edition of the Biennial Louisiana Conference on Hispanic Languages and Literatures, held in Baton Rouge Louisiana, February 23-24, 2006. Each of the authors responds in innovative ways to the idea of connecting texts, contexts, and genres, as well as to the disconnect that is often present between what we perceive as “Hispanic” identity and the experience of those left on the margin. Topics include “Celebrating and Rewriting Difference: (De)colonized Identities,” “Word and Image in the Spanish Golden Age,” and “Latin American Literature and Politics,” among others. The collection is demonstrative of current trends in Hispanic literary and cultural criticism, which are increasingly less bound by traditional regional and temporal constructs. While each author’s research is rooted in a specific socio-historic context, their combined contributions to the present volume provide a far-reaching perspective that expands the notion of “text” to go beyond the literary and engage a multitude of disciplines. “…it emphasizes the often illuminating connections among literary and cultural texts which can be drawn when one conceives of Hispanism and its literary and cultural fields as shaped by trends and issues, rather than divided by periods and regions (...) What strikes me most is the newness of each piece. While each is very well informed, none rehearses old historical or theoretical ground more than is absolutely necessary, but rather presents either a new or overlooked text or offers a new approach.” Leslie Bary, University of Louisiana, Lafayette “An impressive array of well-established and younger scholars has produced a volume whose scope is the entire Hispanic world extending from the Golden Age to the contemporary era. (...) This volume will be of interest to all scholars and critics of Hispanic literature as well as to historians and political scientists. Many of the essays challenge traditional assumptions about the colonization of the Hispanic world as well as the motivations for the revolutions for independence whose influence is still strongly alive in contemporary treatments of fundamental questions of national identity, race, class, and gender.” C. Chris Soufas, Jr., Tulane University

Book Ambivalent Embrace

Download or read book Ambivalent Embrace written by Rachel Kranson and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new cultural history of Jewish life and identity in the United States after World War II focuses on the process of upward mobility. Rachel Kranson challenges the common notion that most American Jews unambivalently celebrated their generally strong growth in economic status and social acceptance during the booming postwar era. In fact, a significant number of Jewish religious, artistic, and intellectual leaders worried about the ascent of large numbers of Jews into the American middle class. Kranson reveals that many Jews were deeply concerned that their lives—affected by rapidly changing political pressures, gender roles, and religious practices—were becoming dangerously disconnected from authentic Jewish values. She uncovers how Jewish leaders delivered jeremiads that warned affluent Jews of hypocrisy and associated "good" Jews with poverty, even at times romanticizing life in America's immigrant slums and Europe's impoverished shtetls. Jewish leaders, while not trying to hinder economic development, thus cemented an ongoing identification with the Jewish heritage of poverty and marginality as a crucial element in an American Jewish ethos.

Book The Rough Guide to Nelson Mandela

Download or read book The Rough Guide to Nelson Mandela written by Max du Preez and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-04-26 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rough Guide to Nelson Mandela is a fresh, honest overview of the life story and the impact of one of the world's greatest modern icons. It assesses the influence of his rural, traditional childhood on his later personality, and it tells the stories of his early years as a revolutionary leader and master strategist like no book has done before; including deeply personal stories of his private life and troubled marriages. It explores his 27 years in an apartheid jail and reveals the inside stories of the white government's first secretive contacts with him and how he encouraged their intelligence chiefs to advise their political masters to abandon apartheid and negotiate a political settlement. This book attempts to explain Mandela's remarkable lack of bitterness and his commitment to reconciliation with the white minority after his release. Readers get a rare insight into Mandela's role during the crucial negotiations period and his term as South Africa's first black president. It critically examines his iconic status and impact on the world stage. This is not just another Mandela book.
