Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Although prescribed burning is an important management tool for ecosystem restoration in Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve, this is the first study that analyzes the effect of prescribed burning on plants and small mammals. In addition, this is the first research carried out on plant community response to prescribed fire in coastal scrub on the west side of Florida, and the 12th study about the effects of prescribed burning on small mammals in Florida. The main objectives were to determine: (a) if there were structural and compositional changes in the plant community after prescribed burning, (b) if small mammals used wetlands as temporal refugia after prescribed fire; and (c) if prescribed burning had a negative effect on the survival of the small mammal species.
