El tercer capitulo establece cuales son los Principios en los que se basa la caza sostenible. En el cuarto se explica que es la caza sostenible y como se puede establecer cuando una actuacion cinegetica (de caza o de gestion) es o no sostenible. En el quinto capitulo se clasifican y analizan los instrumentos necesarios para conseguir una caza sostenible. Por ultimo, en el capitulo sexto, se describen los parametros imprescindibles sobre los que debe sustentarse la caza sostenible: Sostenibilidad, Conservacion, Etica y Transparencia; a la par que se engarza la caza sostenible en la conservacion de la biodiversidad, meta totalmente necesaria para situar adecuadamente la caza en nuestro tiempo."

In fact, this is probably the first scientific book on this important species, apart from Dick Potts’ excellent works on British-introduced population, or ONCFS’s (Office Nationale de la Chasse et le Faune Sauvage, France) older technical reports. This is in strong contrast with a plethora of literature in hunting magazines or non-academic books, not often precise, realistic, or well informed. Thus, the book fills a great bibliography gap that could have important social impact. The common thread of the book is the prominent role a species like this may play for research, from basic physiological or ecological knowledge to socio-economics of hunting and the rural world. The general framework of the book [I1] is the important role that hunting and game management may play in both rural economies and biodiversity conservation, with the partridge as flag species, and also in identifying the “dark drift” that industrial, incorrectly deployed management, or hunting vision may have on both sustainability of resources and nature conservation at large. The final aim of the book is identifying the best future scenario, both for partridge hunters and managers as well as the general public.

Posiblemente los palos del "sombrajo mental" de cada uno sean bastante más confortables: seguir pensando "lo mismo", reunirse, y hablar y hablar, para que todo siga igual... ¿Estamos tal vez rotando como peonzas, en torno a un mismo punto? ¿No deberían existir para la caza otras propuestas, alternativas al más bien retrógrado y siempre cómodo "seguir igual", cuando ya es indudable que "la cosa" va mal? ¿No serán estas posturas acomodaticias el mayor riesgo que la caza racional padece en nuestros días? En este manual hablaremos sobre todo de caza y sostenibilidad; pero tal vez deberíamos hablar más bien de la conciliación entre la Naturaleza y el Hombre, del hermanamiento entre cada cazador y su coto, de la contribución de la caza a la Conservación de la Naturaleza y al bienestar de todos, cazadores o no. En este sentido la caza se enmarca en el Objetivo para el Desarrollo Sostenible "Vida en ecosistemas terrestres" (ODS 15 de la Agenda 2030 de la ONU); pero sus benéficos efectos se extienden a otros ODS distintos (y al revés), después de todo la conciliación entre la Naturaleza y el Hombre se desenvuelve en una compleja trama multidimensional (social, ecológica y económica). En esta novedosa materia, nada es sencillo ni fácil de comprender. Son muchos los avances conceptuales habidos en materia de caza sostenible, hasta el extremo de que esta es hoy una cuestión ineludible ¿Quién defendería una caza insostenible? En realidad, no hay otro argumento ni camino válido para divulgarla socialmente y para defenderla de sus numerosos y enconados detractores actuales y, sobre todo, para mejorarla eficazmente en campo; pero, paradójicamente, se ha progresado muy poco desde los mencionados avances conceptuales hacia la puesta en obra de la sostenibilidad: ir del saber al hacer. Los avances conceptuales habidos, indudables pero más bien dialécticos, no se han convertido en prácticas de campo efectivas. Entre las causas de este retraso destacan las deficiencias tecnológicas: no saber cómo lograr una caza genuinamente sostenible; para conseguir pasar desde el burdo trampantojo actual de la sostenibilidad puramente pregonada, a la sostenibilidad real, cuantificada y aplicada: a los hechos prácticos. Para progresar en este sentido, es preciso investigar científica y técnicamente hasta establecer, proponer y aplicar, un nuevo modelo general para el manejo cinegético que, obviamente, deberá ser divergente respecto a los actuales, manidos y caducos paradigmas, cuyos resultados prácticos son como mínimo cuestionables. Se trata de avanzar desde el agrio debate "caza sí caza no", hasta los pacíficos acuerdos conciliadores. Hablamos de reflexionar, dialogar y discernir hasta alcanzar, desde unos nuevos conceptos, valores, técnicas y procedimientos, un nuevo paradigma para la sostenibilidad cinegética, un nuevo modelo general: el que aquí propondremos y desarrollaremos. Sin proponer, acordar y aplicar un nuevo modelo general de manejo cinegético común para todos los "cotos de caza", términos tan manidos y usuales, y tantas veces tan vaciados de su verdadero contenido, como conservación, ordenación, gestión, territorio, sostenibilidad, desarrollo sostenible, impacto, holismo, integración, custodia, calidad, certificación, ecoetiqueta..., reducidos a una mera y monótona dialéctica, carecerán (carecen) de contenidos cuantitativos reales: de "números".No basta con lamentarse de la mala prensa que la caza tiene.
