Book Language Documentation

Download or read book Language Documentation written by Lenore A. Grenoble and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Language documentation," also often called "documentary linguistics," is a relatively new subfield in linguistics which has emerged in part as a response to the pressing need for collecting, describing, and archiving material on the increasing number of endangered languages. The present book details the most recent developments in this rapidly developing field with papers written by linguists primarily based in academic institutions in North America, although many conduct their fieldwork elsewhere. The articles in this volume position papers and case studies focus on some of the most critical issues in the field. These include (1) the nature of contributions to linguistic theory and method provided by documentary linguistics, including the content appropriate for documentation; (2) the impact and demands of technology in documentation; (3) matters of practice in collaborations among linguists and communities, and in the necessary training of students and community members to conduct documentation activities; and (4) the ethical issues involved in documentary linguistics."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Theodari discusses how a Parliament could be constructed and run for Native Americans of South and North America. This Parliament will be for pure and mixed blood Native Americans, so it includes vast quantities of people from Latin America, where the majority of the people north of Chile, Argentina and Uruguay are mixed blood, having significant American Indian blood. This Parliament will be financed by VOLUNTARY contributions from its constituents rather than mandatory taxes, and the members of this Parliament will be categorized into American Indian linguistic groups that they belong to already, or that they belong to geographically for those mixed blood Indians who no longer speak an American Indian language. The members of this Parliament will mediate every day the Parliament is in sessions, to receive information from God and other Divine beings that is pertinent to their constituents. The men and women of this Parliament will be equal in number and will have separate but equal roles in the Parliament. This Parliament will greatly further the cause of American Indian sovereignty in the Americas. This Parliament, when successful, will serve as a model for other ethnic or racial based Parliaments around the world. .

These include syllable structure, vowel and consonant harmony, tone, and sound symbolism; polysynthesis, the nature of roots and affixes, incorporation, and morpheme order; case; grammatical distinctions of number, gender, shape, control, location, means, manner, time, empathy, and evidence; and distinctions between nouns and verbs, predicates and arguments, and simple and complex sentences; and special speech styles. Part II catalogues the languages by family, listing the location of each language, its genetic affiliation, number of speakers, major published literature, and structural highlights. Finally, there is a catalogue of languages that have evolved in contact situations.

Book excerpt: "This is a Cayuga language resource written by Cayuga language resource developers from Six Nations of the Grand River. The illustrations are cute colourful drawings of mostly children in outdoor settings playing and interacting with animals, plants and adults in the natural environment. Traditional designs often found on beaded regalia and other Haudenosaunee art forms are also found. Perfect for Cayuga immersion language learners as there is no English translation. However, there is one page devoted to noun translation in English. A particularly helpful added feature is the Language Notes section at the end of the book where several pages are dedicated to understanding how sentences are put together and the meanings behind the construction of Cayuga phrases as parts are changed to reflect a different meaning" -- Publisher's website.
