Book Culture and Society in Early Modern Breifne Cavan

Download or read book Culture and Society in Early Modern Breifne Cavan written by Brendan Scott and published by Four Courts Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Breifne region of south Ulster/north Connacht (roughly, modern-day Counties Cavan and Leitrim), has been a traditional buffer zone throughout the late medieval/early modern periods between Gaelic Ireland and its Anglicized parts. As a border region, the clash of cultures was particularly noticeable in Cavan, the plantation project in particular proving contentious, as can be attested through the turbulence and violence of the seventeenth century. Yet despite this upheaval and uncertainty, great cultural and social strides were taken in the region in the run up to the 1641 rising. This collection of essays, which originate in a conference held in Cavan County Museum, explores culture, politics, religion and war in the Cavan area during the early modern period." -- back cover.

Book County Cavan and County Leitrim Ireland genealogy and family history notes

Download or read book County Cavan and County Leitrim Ireland genealogy and family history notes written by Michael C. O'Laughlin and published by Irish Roots Cafe. This book was released on 2002 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated, well indexed book, was created exclusively to help you find your family in Counties Cavan and Leitrim in Ireland. Focusing specifically on families within these neighbouring counties, the book includes an introduction to research and sources in each county. The most numerous families from birth records are given, as well as rather rare Cavan and Leitrim families found in heraldic records. Included you will find a full page map of both counties from the Atlas of Ireland, along with a listing of modern parishes and old townlands, along with the address and location of records for more research. This work includes copies of actual records (some worn, torn and faded), it also includes rough sketches of family coats of arms and notes from centuries past - seldom found elsewhere. The resources provided here will help research any family in the county, including old Irish families, and settler families from England, Scotland, Wales and the continent. This book is a hands on guide for finding your family in Cavan and Leitrim - some family history is included - but it is not a gigantic collection of family histories. For that see 'The Book of Irish Families Great and Small'.

Book Belturbert County Cavan 1610 1714

Download or read book Belturbert County Cavan 1610 1714 written by Brendan Scott and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book charts the plantation town of Belturbet from its inception in the early seventeenth century up to the early eighteenth century. It was a period of profound change, destruction, and renewal, and was home to many remarkable people such as its founder, Sir Stephen Butler, and the famous Church of Ireland clergyman, John Richardson. As well as focusing on the formation of the town itself, this case study examines the experiences of the people of Belturbet during the initial settlement period, throughout the violence of the 1640s, and again later on in the century. The religious tensions evident in Belturbet and the sometimes unsuccessful attempts by the town corporation to impose its authority there are also discussed.
