As we collected manuscripts for this special Frontiers edition, it was heartwarming to hear the comments from contributors. So many research scientists, field biologists and veterinarians could easily have given up and said, ‘I just can’t do this now’, especially with the added challenges posed by the current COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, contributors from around the world were determined to contribute to this collection because of their inspiration and shared commitment with Greg’s vision. The love and admiration within the marine community for Greg is phenomenal. With that said, we would be remiss if we did not say a few words about Greg as a mentor and friend. Greg had a knack for helping students realize their abilities and pursue their own independent contributions to the marine mammal community. He shared in their successes and worked tirelessly to facilitate their aspirations. Greg would involve students, early-career scientists and colleagues in projects, introduce them to collaborators and promote them and their work. Greg was a genuinely caring person. When he asked you ‘how are you doing’, he honestly wanted to know. He was always there, ready to listen and provide guidance. If you were to ask Greg what was most important to him in life, he would say God, family and marine life (and one could argue that he had a special fondness for manatees). He believed in the beauty of nature and that God had a hand in all of it. He was in pursuit of ensuring that we all share this earth responsibly and sustainably. We miss Greg dearly, but honor and celebrate him as we carry on in our pursuits.

Book excerpt: “The beluga is an Arctic species, and the St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE) population is at the southernmost limit of the species distribution. Up until 2007, the population appeared to be stable. However, unusually high numbers of young of the year found dead in 2008 and 2012, and a low aerial photographic estimate of abundance in 2009, triggered a review of the population status in 2013. Based largely on this review, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) re-evaluated the status of SLE beluga in 2014, and recommended that the population be designated as ‘Endangered’ (COSEWIC 2014). Here, we present a new abundance index of SLE beluga from a series of eight visual aerial systematic line-transect surveys flown in August and September 2014. This will be used to evaluate trends in abundance along with the 36 visual surveys completed with similar methods since 2001. We also present an update on the number of beluga carcasses that have been recovered since the last assessment (DFO 2014)"--Introd., p. 1, 2.

Book excerpt: "The St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE) beluga population is located at the southernmost limit of the species range. It occurs primarily in the SLE and seasonally in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. A review of the population status (2007) concluded that the population over the period 1988-2007 was stable. However, in recent years there has been an increase in reported deaths of young-of-the-year and an apparent increase in perinatal mortalities. This increase as well as change in the age/sex structure of the deaths suggests that its status may have changed. A review in 2013 incorporated carcass monitoring and aerial survey data into a population model. The model results indicate that the population was slightly increasing from the 1960s to the early 2000s and has probably declined, to under 1000 animals during the last decade. The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) designated the population as ‘endangered’ in 2014, and its status is "threatened" according to the Species at Risk Act. In 2014, new aerial surveys were flown. The Species at Risk directorate requested that these surveys be reviewed and that the number of reported deaths be updated"--Context, p. [1].

To discern the factors contributing to population trends, scientists must consider the full complement of threats faced by marine mammals. Once populations or ecosystems are found to be at risk of adverse impacts, it is critical to decide which combination of stressors to reduce to bring the population or ecosystem into a more favorable state. Assessing all stressors facing a marine mammal population also provides the environmental context for evaluating whether an additional activity could threaten it. Approaches to Understanding the Cumulative Effects of Stressors on Marine Mammals builds upon previous reports to assess current methodologies used for evaluating cumulative effects and identify new approaches that could improve these assessments. This review focuses on ways to quantify exposure-related changes in the behavior, health, or body condition of individual marine mammals and makes recommendations for future research initiatives.

Book excerpt: "The potential benefits of relocating live stranded or entrapped beluga to recovery of the St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE) beluga population were examined using a demographic model. The population is currently declining and information on reproduction rates are lacking. It is not possible to determine if the current decline is due to low reproductive rates, elevated mortality among neonates, or both. Adult survival is already quite high and there is unlikely much room for further improvement. Efforts to improve survival of neonates and juveniles are most likely to benefit population recovery. However, considerable numbers of animals must be assisted and successfully relocated each year to improve survival and halt the decline in population trend. Reports of live-stranded neonates or entrapped juveniles are infrequent. Therefore, the benefit of relocating these few individuals to population recovery is nil, and does not meet the objectives of Conservation Translocation. The occurrences of entrapped juveniles are rare, but if in good health these animals are more likely to survive when relocated compared to abandoned neonates. From a conservation perspective, the benefit of relocating entrapped juveniles to the population as a whole is likely nil given the rarity of these events. However, relocating these individuals may be considered on other grounds. Some of the factors that need to be considered have been identified (e.g. DFO Release and Rehabilitation Criteria)"--Abstract, p. iii.
