Book The Large Scale Structure of Space Time

Download or read book The Large Scale Structure of Space Time written by S. W. Hawking and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1975-02-27 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Einstein's General Theory of Relativity leads to two remarkable predictions: first, that the ultimate destiny of many massive stars is to undergo gravitational collapse and to disappear from view, leaving behind a 'black hole' in space; and secondly, that there will exist singularities in space-time itself. These singularities are places where space-time begins or ends, and the presently known laws of physics break down. They will occur inside black holes, and in the past are what might be construed as the beginning of the universe. To show how these predictions arise, the authors discuss the General Theory of Relativity in the large. Starting with a precise formulation of the theory and an account of the necessary background of differential geometry, the significance of space-time curvature is discussed and the global properties of a number of exact solutions of Einstein's field equations are examined. The theory of the causal structure of a general space-time is developed, and is used to study black holes and to prove a number of theorems establishing the inevitability of singualarities under certain conditions. A discussion of the Cauchy problem for General Relativity is also included in this 1973 book.

Book The Physical Basis of The Direction of Time

Download or read book The Physical Basis of The Direction of Time written by H. Dieter Zeh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The asymmetry of natural phenomena under time reversal is striking. Here Zehinvestigates the most important classes of physical phenomena that characterize the arrow of time, discussing their interrelations as well as striving to uncover a cosmological common root of the phenomena, such as the time-independent wave function of the universe. The description of irreversible phenomena is shown to be fundamentally "observer-related". Both physicists and philosophers of science who reviewed the first edition considered this book a magnificent survey, a concise, technically sophisticated, up-to-date discussion of the subject, showing fine sensivity to some of the crucial philosophicalsubtleties. This new and expanded edition will be welcomed by both students and specialists.

Book Quantum Gravity and Quantum Cosmology

Download or read book Quantum Gravity and Quantum Cosmology written by Gianluca Calcagni and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum gravity has developed into a fast-growing subject in physics and it is expected that probing the high-energy and high-curvature regimes of gravitating systems will shed some light on how to eventually achieve an ultraviolet complete quantum theory of gravity. Such a theory would provide the much needed information about fundamental problems of classical gravity, such as the initial big-bang singularity, the cosmological constant problem, Planck scale physics and the early-time inflationary evolution of our Universe. While in the first part of this book concepts of quantum gravity are introduced and approached from different angles, the second part discusses these theories in connection with cosmological models and observations, thereby exploring which types of signatures of modern and mathematically rigorous frameworks can be detected by experiments. The third and final part briefly reviews the observational status of dark matter and dark energy, and introduces alternative cosmological models. Edited and authored by leading researchers in the field and cast into the form of a multi-author textbook at postgraduate level, this volume will be of benefit to all postgraduate students and newcomers from neighboring disciplines wishing to find a comprehensive guide for their future research.

Book Decoding Gravity Time and Causality

Download or read book Decoding Gravity Time and Causality written by Dr Rohit Kale and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2022-01-31 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given in this book is the phenomenological description of a theory of Quantum Gravity which I call 'Dynamic General Relativity' without a sliver of complex mathematics. It is General Relativity reimagined. The theory explains what General Relativity means at the most fundamental level. Potential errors in Einstein's Special Relativity and General Relativity lie within the book with satisfactory corrections. Starting with GR, taking just a few assumptions from Loop Quantum Gravity and with just three additional assumptions i.e. 'Creation, Destruction and Entanglement', a rather complex theory can be constructed. General Relativity, Newtonian Dynamics, Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND) pop out of the theory effortlessly at appropriate levels. The theory almost effortlessly unifies Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity and can offer a potential bridge between Loop Quantum Gravity and String Theory, almost completely redefining how we look at higher dimensions and Strings. Definitions and explanations for poorly defined aspects of physics like inertia, kinetic energy, the relativity of time and space, wave-particle duality of light and matter and quantum superposition emerge out of it effortlessly. It can derive the causality of all the fundamental forces of nature and thus explain what causes phenomena like charge, attraction/repulsion, electromagnetic bonding, etc. It answers the fundamental questions like 'Why everything doesn't collapse under gravity?' or 'Why matter and antimatter did not annihilate each other at the time of creation?' and ultimately 'Why the universe exists?'. A must-read for every person or physicist who wishes to know the ultimate truth and is troubled by the enigmatic question, 'Why Newton's apple falls?'

Book Time Causality and the Quantum Theory

Download or read book Time Causality and the Quantum Theory written by S. Mehlberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 1980-11-30 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intermittent but mentally quite disabling illness prevented Henry Mehlberg from becoming recognized more widely as the formidable scholar he was, when at his best. During World War II, he had lived in hiding under the false identity of an egg farmer, when the Nazis occupied his native Poland. After relatively short academic appointments at the University of Toronto and at Princeton University, he taught at the University of Chicago until reaching the age of normal retirement. But partly at the initiative of his Chicago colleague Charles Morris, who had preceded him to a 'post-retirement' profes sorship at the University of Florida in Gainesville, and with the support of Eugene Wigner, he then received an appointment at that University, where he remained until his death in 1979. In Chicago, he organized a discussion group of scholars from that area as a kind of small scale model of the Vienna Circle, which met at his apart ment, where he lived with his first wife Janina, a mathematician. It was during this Chicago period that the functional disturbances from his illness were pronounced and not infrequent. The very unfortunate result was that colleagues who had no prior knowledge of the caliber of his writings in Polish and French or of his very considerable intellectual powers, had little incentive to read his published work, which he had begun to write in English.

Book Quantum Reality Relativistic Causality and Closing the Epistemic Circle

Download or read book Quantum Reality Relativistic Causality and Closing the Epistemic Circle written by Wayne C. Myrvold and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-01-29 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 2006, a major international conference was held at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, Canada, to celebrate the career and work of a remarkable man of letters. Abner Shimony, who is well known for his pioneering contributions to foundations of quantum mechanics, is a physicist as well as a philosopher, and is highly respected among the intellectuals of both communities. In line with Shimony’s conviction that philosophical investigation is not to be divorced from theoretical and empirical work in the sciences, the conference brought together leading theoretical physicists, experimentalists, as well as philosophers. This book collects twenty-three original essays stemming from the conference, on topics including history and methodology of science, Bell's theorem, probability theory, the uncertainty principle, stochastic modifications of quantum mechanics, and relativity theory. It ends with a transcript of a fascinating discussion between Lee Smolin and Shimony, ranging over the entire spectrum of Shimony's wide-ranging contributions to philosophy, science, and philosophy of science.

Book Theories of Causality

Download or read book Theories of Causality written by John Losee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What types of entities qualify as causes and effects? What is the relationship between cause and effect? How are causal claims to be assessed? The first question deals with the structure of the world; the second is about theories that interpret the relationship of causes to effects; while the third has to do with proper procedure in science and everyday life. This volume is a wide-ranging history of answers that have been given to these three questions, and their relationship to scientific understanding.Losee presents a number of theories of causality within a historical survey that emphasizes the interrelationship between these theories and developments in science. His analysis displays the strengths and weaknesses of these theories so as to contribute to our present understanding of causal relatedness.Among the positions discussed are those of Aristotle, Hume, Kant, Mill, Salmon, Lewis, and Woodward. Losee's analysis displays the strengths and weaknesses of theories that identify causal relatedness with regularity of sequence, probability increase, energy transfer, exchange of a conserved quantity, counterfactual dependence, and inferability. These theories are judged, in part,by their ability to resolvedifficulties posed by instances of overdetermination, causation by omission, preventive causation, and causation by disconnection. Since applications of the theories to these instances disagree, a strategy of employing multiple concepts of causation is examined.Theories of Causality also describes the particular difficulties for causal analysis posed by quantum mechanics. One such difficulty is the prohibition against combining a causal analysis of a quantum process with a spatio-temporal description of that process.

Book Holographic Entanglement Entropy

Download or read book Holographic Entanglement Entropy written by Mukund Rangamani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of developments in the field of holographic entanglement entropy. Within the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, it is shown how quantum entanglement is computed by the area of certain extremal surfaces. The general lessons one can learn from this connection are drawn out for quantum field theories, many-body physics, and quantum gravity. An overview of the necessary background material is provided together with a flavor of the exciting open questions that are currently being discussed. The book is divided into four main parts. In the first part, the concept of entanglement, and methods for computing it, in quantum field theories is reviewed. In the second part, an overview of the AdS/CFT correspondence is given and the holographic entanglement entropy prescription is explained. In the third part, the time-dependence of entanglement entropy in out-of-equilibrium systems, and applications to many body physics are explored using holographic methods. The last part focuses on the connection between entanglement and geometry. Known constraints on the holographic map, as well as, elaboration of entanglement being a fundamental building block of geometry are explained. The book is a useful resource for researchers and graduate students interested in string theory and holography, condensed matter and quantum information, as it tries to connect these different subjects linked by the common theme of quantum entanglement.
