He shows how we can have a causal understanding of the mental without having to see attitudes and experiences as internal, causally interacting entities; and he defends this view against influential objections. The premises constituting the problem are analyzed before a survey is developed of the most popular theories on mental causation. It is demonstrated in detail why most of these canonical solutions must be considered deficient. In a third part, the 'new compatibilist’s' approach to mental causation is explored, which is characterized by assertion of a non-identity-but-non-distinctness principle. The last part aims to offer an alternative solution to the problem. On the basis of a certain set of counterfactual conditionals, which are jointly taken to provide a definition of 'causal proportionality' that improves the existing definitions, it is shown that a specific, and hitherto widely neglected, version of causal overdeterminationism must be considered the most successful solution to the problem of mental causation.

Book excerpt: Contemporary philosophy of mind is dominated by the broadly functionalist view that what is distinctive of mentality is a certain kind of causal structure. Such functionalist theories are the keystone of contemporary physicalism. I believe that causal theories are inadequate to account for mental phenomena, but that existing objections to them---while largely correct---fail to address their most basic inadequacy: the causal accounts of properties in which causal theories of mind are embedded. I draw attention to a relation of determination that is stronger than causation. That relation is grounding. Grounding is what is picked out by the English phrase 'in virtue of' in a specific range of uses. I draw out the logic of the relation through consideration of examples, and then show how it can be employed in formulating a criterion of identity for properties. This provides a framework for approaching fundamental questions about the relation between mental and physical properties. I argue that mental properties are neither identical to nor realized by physical properties, and that physicalism is thus false. The argument appeals to the special role the mind plays in determining certain normative phenomena, and the inability of physical properties to play that role. I close by defending antiphysicalism from objections concerning mental causation.

There are two distinct but related ways in which people understand things as happening, denoted by the terms "causation" and "action". This book is concerned with both.; The central claim and organizing principle of the book is that, by the end of the second year of life, children have differentiated two core theories of how things happen. These theories deal with causation and action. The two theories have a common point of origin in the infant's experience of producing actions, but thereafter diverge, both in content and in realm of application. Once established, the core theories of causation and action never change, but form a permanent metaphysical underpinning on which subsequent developments in the understanding of how things happen are erected. The story of development is therefore largely the story of how further concepts become attached to integrated with the core theories. Although the developmental and adult literatures on causal understanding appear at first glance to have little in common, in fact this appearance is illusory, and the idea of two theories helps to bring the two literatures in contact with each other.; The book begins with a survey of the main philosophical ideas about causation and action. Following this, the possible origins of understanding in infancy are reviewed, and separate chapters then deal with the development of understanding of action and causation through childhood. This is then linked to the adult understanding of action and causation, and the literature on adult causal attribution and causal judgement is reviewed from this perspective.

Over the past few centuries this view has faced formidable challenges from epistemology, metaphysics, and, more recently, cognitive science. However, in recent years there has been renewed interest in it, due to new work on perceptual consciousness, objectivity, and causal understanding. This volume collects nineteen original essays by leading philosophers and psychologists on these topics. Questions addressed include: What are the commitments of commonsense realism? Does it entail any particular view of the nature of perceptual experience, or any particular view of the epistemology of perceptual knowledge? Should we think of commonsense realism as a view held by some philosophers, or is there a sense in which we are pre-theoretically committed to commonsense realism in virtue of the experience we enjoy or the concepts we use or the explanations we give? Is commonsense realism defensible, and if so how, in the face of the formidable criticism it faces?
