Book excerpt: Work attitudes and organizational withdrawal, as general psychological and behavioral constructs, were examined in a causal model. Retirement intentions and desires to retire were included in a conceptualization of organizational withdrawal because recent legislation has removed mandatory retirement for virtually all employees. Retirement decisions may now be classified as voluntary withdrawal. Data from a pilot study of university employees resulted in two empirically-derived withdrawal constructs, work withdrawal and job withdrawal. Multiple regression analyses revealed that the two behavioral families were both predicted from attitudinal measures. Retirement was related to turnover intentions and attitudinal antecedents similar to other forms of withdrawal. In the current study, two job classifications, academic and nonacademic staff, at a large state university were interviewed about their work-role satisfactions, job importance, withdrawal cognitions and intentions, health condition/symptoms, and retirement valence to test a causal model of attitudes and withdrawal. A two-stage procedure was used to assess the fit of the measurement model and structural equation model for a total sample of 348 university employees using the LISREL VI maximum likelihood estimation procedure. Measures of goodness of fit for both the measurement and structural models were excellent; the models were a good fit to the data. Exploratory causal models were also derived and separately tested for the academic and nonacademic employees. Similarities and differences in the two job classifications and implications of the results for individuals and organizations are discussed. Retirement issues are discussed in detail because of the changes, and possible difficulties, that may arise in the future for organizations and individuals. A follow-up study and future directions for research are described.

His research has carefully developed and tested theory related to job satisfaction, withdrawal from work, and sexual harassment. Edited by Hulin's students, The Psychology of Work discusses research in job satisfaction. This research shows that job satisfaction plays an essential role in theories of organizational behavior. Formal models are used, such as item response theory, structural equation modeling, and computational models. Three general and consistent themes in Hulin's research are represented in this book's chapters. The first theme is a focus on broad, general constructs, such as job satisfaction. The virtue of this approach is that a wide range of behavior can be explained by a small number of variables. The second theme involves the examination of the antecedents and consequences of job satisfaction. This theme is increasingly important because it ties research on job attitudes and job behaviors where links are consistently found to social attitudes and behaviors where links are rarely found. The third theme consists of Hulin's interest in the use of formal models to characterize and understand behavior. This volume will be of interest to scholars and students in industrial/organizational psychology, human resources, organizational behavior, and management.

For example, redefinitions of careers and the changing nature of working have contributed to the emergence of distinct forms and patterns of work experiences across the prototypical work lifespan. Likewise, older individuals are increasingly delaying retirement in favor of longer-term labor force participation. The study of age and work, and work and retirement by industrial, work, and organizational (IWO) psychologists and scholars of human resources management and organizational behavior (HR/OB) has recently proliferated in part as a result of such trends, along with the recognition that age-related processes are important indicators of various proximal (e.g., job attitudes, work behaviors, work motives, and wellbeing) and distal outcomes (e.g., sustainable employability, climates for aging, and firm performance) at various levels of abstraction in modern work environments. Recent theoretical advances have suggested that age, along with individual psychological factors and various contextual influences can jointly influence work outcomes that contribute to long-term employment success, including work performance, job attitudes, work orientations, and motivations. Similar theoretical developments concerning retirement have postulated individual and contextual elements that drive success in the transition from career and work roles to non-work and leisure as well as post-retirement bridge employment roles. In this Research Topic, we aim to curate a collection of papers that are representative of current trends and advances in thinking about and investigating the role of age in workplace processes and the changing nature of retirement. Our hope is to showcase various contemporary ideas and rigorous empirical studies as a means to inform broader thinking and to support enhanced theorizing and organizational practice regarding these processes.
