Book Investigating Translation

Download or read book Investigating Translation written by Allison Beeby and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000-12-08 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a selection of papers presented at an international conference on Translation Studies in Barcelona in 1998. The papers illustrate four areas that are of particular interest in translation research today in Europe, Asia and Latin America. The purpose of the first section, ‘Investigating Translation Paradigms’, is to reach a critical revision of existing paradigms and to develop new ones in approaching the translated text. The second section, ‘Investigating the Translation Process’, focuses on the skills, knowledge and strategies that make up translation competence. The third section, ‘Investigating Translation and Ideology’ addresses not only the ‘invisible’ influence of ideologies on the translator, but also the role of translators in transmitting ideology. The fourth section, ‘Investigating Translation Receivers’ envisages translators as communicators caught between the opposing trends of localisation and globalisation. This tension can be seen in the selection of the papers, some of which reflect on research carried out in recently established translation centres in Spain, while others discuss the latest work of scholars from long established centres in other countries.

Download or read book Hustler Rave XXX written by David Caleb Acevedo and published by Lethe Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meanings of "a hustler" or "a hustle" can be interpreted in many ways, but in gay urban society, the norm is young men providing sexual services to "customers" in exchange for money or other kinds of compensation such as gifts or intoxicants to their "boys." While it's easy for many to dismiss such individuals as scum of the streets (as with female prostitutes), hustlers often come from troubled backgrounds, and it's crucial that we not dehumanize them. As dartboards for the ills of contemporary society (poverty, racism/sexism, homophobia/transphobia, sexual/substance/physical abuse, mental illness, HIV/STDs, etc), young men and women that turn to the streets, alleys, cheap hotels and the Internet for survival are reflections and manifestations of a greater societal collapse. In the pages of Hustler Rave XXX, Latino poets David Caleb Acevedo and Charlie Vázquez present portrait character studies of very human urban hustlers that seek to answer our strange sense of fascination with these young men.

Book Computer Models of Watershed Hydrology

Download or read book Computer Models of Watershed Hydrology written by Vijay P. Singh and published by Water Resources Publications, LLC. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book stemmed from a desire to provide a comprehensive account of some of the world's popular computer models of watershed hydrology. To achieve this objective, a variety of models that together spanned a range of characteristics were included. Some of those models represent a large class of models, some are comprehensive, some are applicable to not only civil works but also to agricultural, range and forest, and nonpoint source pollution fields; some are equipped with the GIS and remote sensing capability, and some represent a large cross-section of models from around the world. The subject matter of this book is divided into 29 chapters. Beginning with introductory remarks on watershed modeling in Chapter 1, model calibration and reliability estimation are presented in Chapters 2 and 3, respectively. The next ten chapters (4 to 13) present some of the popular models from around the world. These models are in the realm of civil engineering applications of watershed hydrology models. Some of the models are more comprehensive than others and some have the management capabilities. The next two models, presented in Chapters 14 and 15, are large-scale models and embody GIS and remote sensing technology. The models presented in Chapters 16 to 23 are more physically-based and distributed in nature, quite suited to nonpoint source pollution modeling, and to assess environmental impact of land use changes. The remaining 5 models presented in Chapters 24 to 29 are within the realm of agricultural and forestry applications. Nonpoint source pollution, erosion and impact on soil productivity, drainage design, etc., can be modeled by applying these models. Computer Models of Watershed Hydrology will be of interest to practicing hydrologists, especially to hydrologic modelers and the model users, as well as specialists in the fields of civil engineering, agricultural engineering, environmental science, forest and range science, earth science, climatology, and watershed sciences. Graduate students, teachers engaged in graduate instruction, and researchers will also find this book useful. Due to the popularity of this book and with innovations in printing, this was reprinted in 2012 with the original information. It is now part of WRP’s Classic Resource Edition.

Book Benchmarking Water Services

Download or read book Benchmarking Water Services written by Enrique Cabrera Jr and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benchmarking has become a key tool in the water industry to promote and achieve performance targets for utilities. The use of this tool for performance improvement through systematic search and adaptation of leading practices, has expanded globally during the past decade. Many ongoing projects worldwide aim to address different needs and objectives, in varying contexts, with outstanding results and impact. Benchmarking Water Services provides valuable information to everyone interested in benchmarking in the water industry. The text is aimed at utilities considering joining a benchmarking project, experienced practitioners in charge of organizing a benchmarking exercise, consultants, regulators and researchers. The document is presented with a clear practice oriented approach and can be used as a how-to-benchmark guide presented from different perspectives (participants, organizers, supervising bodies). Readers will gain practical insight on real life benchmarking practices and will benefit from the experiences gained in some of the leading benchmarking projects of the water industry (including the IWA-WSAA benchmarking efforts, the European Benchmarking Co-operation and the several benchmarking projects carried out in Austria and Central Europe). The manual also presents the new IWA Benchmarking Framework, which aims to harmonize the terms used to describe benchmarking and performance indicators practices in the water industry, guaranteeing a more fluent and efficient communication. This Manual of Best Practice is edited by the IWA Specialist Group on Benchmarking and Performance Assessment, and co-published by AWWA and IWA Publishing. Praise for Benchmarking Water Services: "The continual trend of conceptual to specifics throughout the book provides for an educational experience each time the book is either casually perused or carefully studied." "The authors (Cabrera, Haskins and Fritiz) diligently pursue the focus of improvement." "Benchmarking Water Services is an in depth and practical ‘must have’ guide for any utility currently engaged in or planning to develop a benchmarking process" - Gregory M. Baird (2012) Benchmarking: An International Journal 19:2. Book World Literature Cosmopolitanism Globality

Download or read book World Literature Cosmopolitanism Globality written by Gesine Müller and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2019-10-21 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From today’s vantage point it can be denied that the confidence in the abilities of globalism, mobility, and cosmopolitanism to illuminate cultural signification processes of our time has been severely shaken. In the face of this crisis, a key concept of this globalizing optimism as World Literature has been for the past twenty years necessarily is in the need of a comprehensive revision. World Literature, Cosmopolitanism, Globality: Beyond, Against, Post, Otherwise offers a wide range of contributions approaching the blind spots of the globally oriented Humanities for phenomena that in one way or another have gone beyond the discourses, aesthetics, and political positions of liberal cosmopolitanism and neoliberal globalization. Departing basically (but not exclusively) from different examples of Latin American literatures and cultures in globalized contexts, this volume provides innovative insights into critical readings of World Literature and its related conceptualizations. A timely book that embraces highly innovative perspectives, it will be a mustread for all scholars involved in the field of the global dimensions of literature.
