Book History of Canadian Catholics

Download or read book History of Canadian Catholics written by Terence J. Fay and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2002-05-09 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A History of Canadian Catholics Terence Fay relates the long story of the Catholic Church and its followers, beginning with how the church and its adherents came to Canada, how the church established itself, and how Catholic spirituality played a part in shaping Canadian society. He also describes how recent social forces have influenced the church. Using an abundance of sources, Fay discusses Gallicanism (French spirituality), Romanism (Roman spirituality), and Canadianism - the indigenisation of Catholic spirituality in the Canadian lifestyle. Fay begins with a detailed look at the struggle of French Catholics to settle a new land, including their encounters with the Amerindians. He analyses the conflict caused by the arrival of the Scottish and Irish Catholics, which threatened Gallican church control. Under Bishops Bourget and Lynch, the church promoted a romantic vision of Catholic unity in Canada. By the end of the century, however, German, Ukrainian, Polish, and Hungarian immigrants had begun to challenge the French and Irish dominance of Catholic life and provide the foundation of a multicultural church. With the creation of the Canadian Catholic Conference in the postwar period these disparate groups were finally drawn into a more unified Canadian church. A History of Canadian Catholics is especially timely for students of religion and history and will also be of interest to the general reader who would like an understanding the development of Catholic roots in Canadian soil.

Download or read book Hidden and Forgotten written by Iheanyi M. Enwerem and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catholics of African descent have been in the Catholic Church in Canada since Canada's pre-independent days, and yet there has been and still is a poverty of pastoral outreach to them. In a richly researched yet enjoyably readable study, Father Enwerem posits that the recent arrival of African missionaries is a good sign for the rejuvenation of Catholicism in Canada, but he suggests that the Church’s continuing silence on the presence and contributions of Africans in the historiography of Catholicism in Canada betrays a subtle racism. Compelling and utterly convincing, Hidden and Forgotten addresses the urgent need to correct this incomplete, and therefore false, history of Catholicism in Canada.

Book Why Are You Afraid Have You No Faith

Download or read book Why Are You Afraid Have You No Faith written by Pope Francis and published by Our Sunday Visitor. This book was released on 2021-02-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has left an indelible mark on our lives, and the same is true for the Church. Masses were suspended for months, people could not receive the sacraments, and during that time Pope Francis celebrated Mass alone every day. Why are you afraid? Have you no faith? collects some of the words from the pope’s daily homilies when the world was in isolation during the “long Lent” in the spring of 2020, as well as Angelus messages and prayers he delivered. This book is filled with poignant photos that bring to life Pope Francis’ words of support and encouragement, especially from his extraordinary blessing “Urbi et Orbi” in an empty St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican on March 27, 2020. The dozens of photos in this book illustrate the themes often evoked by the Holy Father during the pandemic, including fraternal love, solidarity, the common good, and the virtue of hope. Commemorating an historically important chapter in both the papacy of Francis and the history of the modern world, this book is another avenue by which the Holy Father shares his uplifting message of wisdom, hope, and love with those who have suffered in pain, loneliness, and fear. Despite the dire challenges we have faced during this pandemic, Pope Francis reminds us that evil does not destroy confidence in God, and it does not break the solidarity of humanity.

Book New Short History of the Catholic Church

Download or read book New Short History of the Catholic Church written by Norman Tanner and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ____________ 'A useful book of reference by the master of the history of the councils of the Church... There is enormous value in a short, reliable, and careful study of a sequence of events that may have unfamiliar joinings and passageways to modern believers...' - Catholic Historical Review 'A short, readable and informed survey of church history.' - The Church of England Newspaper 'A rich foundation for Catholic understanding and witness.' - Catholic San Francisco ____________ A one-volume history of the Christian people from Pentecost to the present day, with principal focus on the Catholic Church. Having passed AD 2000 it seems appropriate and necessary to have a new short history of the first two millennia of the Christian era. In the last half century there has been a massive amount of research into Church history, published in learned articles and in multi-volume works. Full notice is taken of these recent scholarly initiatives in writing this short account, which is also eminently readable. In each section there is a balance between the institutional and the more directly religious dimensions of the Church - here are some of the elements: bishops, canon law, charity, councils crusades, devotions, heresies, laity, liturgy, martyrs, missionaries, parishes, pilgrimages, popes, prayer, priesthood, religious orders, sacraments, schools, theologians, universities and the vita consacrata. The scope is wide; the pace of the narrative is attractive.
