Book Cathodic Protection Field Trials on Prestressed Concrete Components Final Report

Download or read book Cathodic Protection Field Trials on Prestressed Concrete Components Final Report written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the final report in a study to demonstrate the feasibility of using cathodic protection (CP) on concrete bridge structures containing prestressed steel. The interim report, FHWA-RD-95-032, has more details on the installation of selected CP systems. Past laboratory and test yard studies had indicated that overprotection could result in the evolution of atomic hydrogen and the embrittlement of prestressing steel. Systems utilizing catalyzed titanium mesh, conductive rubber, and arc-sprayed zinc anodes were installed on prestressed pilings and girders of the Howard Frankland Bridge in Tampa, Florida; and systems using flame-sprayed zinc and conductive paint anodes were installed on the soffit of prestressed box beams of the Abbey Road and West 130th Street bridges near Cleveland, Ohio. For most of the components tested, CP was achieved safely and reliably without reaching conditions that could result in embrittlement of prestressed steel.

Book Demonstration of Remote Monitoring Technology for Cathodic Protection Systems Phase II

Download or read book Demonstration of Remote Monitoring Technology for Cathodic Protection Systems Phase II written by and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army owns and maintains more than 3000 miles of buried natural gas pipeline, 20,000 underground storage tanks (USTs), and more than 300 elevated water storage tanks. Cathodic protection (CP) is required by regulation on many of these structures to prevent corrosion. Periodic testing is required to ensure proper CP system operation, but many Directorates of Public Works (DPWs) do not have sufficient resources to conduct such tests regularly. Many malfunctions remain undetected until the structure corrodes and leaks. Several companies have begun manufacturing remote monitoring units (RMUs) for CP systems. This technology allows personnel to monitor multiple CP systems from a central location so problems can be detected and repaired immediately. An 8 month field evaluation of CP RMUs was performed to determine the effectiveness of systems from three manufacturers. Demonstration systems were selected on the basis of cost, features, availability, etc. RMU readings were compared with manual method readings throughout a variety of conditions. Units from only one manufacturer performed successfully. New systems have entered the market since this demonstration began.

Book An Introduction to Cathodic Protection

Download or read book An Introduction to Cathodic Protection written by J. Paul Guyer and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cathodic protection is a method to reduce corrosion by minimizing the difference in potential between anode and cathode. This is achieved by applying a current to the structure to be protected (such as a pipeline) from some outside source. When enough current is applied, the whole structure will be at one potential; thus, anode and cathode sites will not exist. Cathodic protection is commonly used on many types of structures, such as pipelines, underground storage tanks, locks, and ship hulls.
