Book excerpt: "Ecclesiology from below," as it operates in this work, is directed to history; it moves through the actual church of history to ecclesiology or to an understanding of the church both as it is and as it should be. In the first volume that passage was fairly explicit because comprehensive ecclesiologies in our sense did not exist. In this volume ecclesiology itself becomes much more directly the subject matter of the book, but without losing sight of concrete history and the degree to which these ecclesiologies are historically conditioned. Put somewhat differently, the main goal of this "comparative ecclesiology" is not simply to lay down one after another different ecclesiologies that emerged over the last five hundred years, although that describes the book with empirical accuracy. Its larger intent is to show the richness, vitality, and creativity of the whole church as it moves through history, adjusting to new times, places, and cultures.

As far back as literature and the monuments of architecture and sculpture reach, proofs are found that the musical art was practised. Egyptian sculpture bore images of harps, flutes and other musical instruments as early as 3000 to 4000 B.C.; and it is said that in China, by command of the emperor Hoang-Ty, between 2000 and 3000 B.C., Ling Lun undertook the theoretical foundation of the scales. In India also, as the vedas (sacred books) prove, musical culture dates from antiquity. 2. Have any musical monuments, 1. e.melodies of those ancient times bee?i preserved? No; we have information only as to musical instruments and the modes or scales (of rather later times) which formed the foundation of the melodies. 3. Was not singing also practised in those ancient times? Certainly, it is even widely assumed that vocal music is older than instrumental, at least if by the latter we are to understand the production of melodies instrumentally. 4.
