How are national galleries involved in the construction national art? National Galleries is the first book to undertake a panoramic view of a type of national institution – which are sometimes called national museums of fine art – that is now found in almost every nation on earth. Adopting a richly illustrated, globally inclusive, comparative view, Simon Knell argues that national galleries should not be understood as ‘great galleries’ but as peculiar sites where art is made to perform in acts of nation building. A book that fundamentally rewrites the history of these institutions and encourages the reader to dispense with elitist views of their worth, Knell reveals an unseen geography and a rich complexity of performance. He considers the ways the national galleries entangle art and nation, and the differing trajectories and purposes of international and national art. Exploring galleries, artists and artworks from around the world, National Galleries is an argument about how we think about and study these institutions. Privileging the situatedness of each national gallery performance, and valuing localism over universalism, Knell looks particularly at how national art is constructed and represented. The nine contributions originate from an international symposium at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Robert L. Brown formulates a set of rules that account for the way Indian art was transformed when adopted in Southeast Asian regions. Sara Schastok shows how the dating of Amaravātī style bronzes was influenced by colonial thinking. In comparing the northeast Indian and Javanese bronzes figurines, Susan L. Huntington concludes that although Javanese bronzes owe something to northeast Indian ones, each group has its own distinctive characteristics. Pauline Lunsingh Scheurleer’s contribution stresses the Javanese aspects of Javanese bronzes. Nandana Chutiwongs focuses on images of Avalokiteśvara in this manifestation as Great Compassionate Lord. A fragment of a bronze-ringed rattle leads A. de Vries Robbé to trace the development of this attribute of mendicant Buddhist monks from India, over mainland Southeast Asia, to Central and East Java. Moving to the great Buddhist monument in Central Java, the Borobudur, its structure and meaning are given a completely new interpretation by John C. Huntington. A northeast Indian iconographic model is proposed by J.A. Schoterman for the famous images of Amoghapāśa Lokeśvara and his retinue in the East Javanese temple Candi Jago. Finally, Marijke J. Klokke offers a new interpretation of the iconography of the East Javanese ‘portrait statues’.

They represent three generations of artistic training at ITB, as well as distinct approaches to calligraphic abstraction that reflect changing values, identities and conventions in Indonesia from the 1970s to the present. Together, their works highlight how they interacted with global conventions in modern art, evolving ideas around Islamic spirituality, feminist activism and the experience of being Muslim in Indonesia.

It asks vital questions about the ways that histories and stories have been suppressed and invites consideration about what happens once a commemorative moment has passed. Like a Cubist painting, this modality offers a critical strategy by which also to approach the volume as dismantling, reassembling, and re-enacting existing commemorative tropes; as offering multiple, conditional, and contingent viewpoints that unfold over time; and as generating a broader (although far from being comprehensive) range of counter-memorial performances. The chapters in this volume are thus provisional, interconnected, and adaptive: they offer critical assemblages by which to approach commemorative narratives or showcase lacunae therein; by which to return to and intervene in ongoing readings of the past from the present moment; and by which not necessarily to resolve, but rather to understand the troubled and troubling narratives of the present moment. Contributors propose that these preoccupations are not a means of turning away from present concerns, but rather a means of grappling with how the past informs or is shaped to inform them; and how such concerns are defined by immediate social contexts and networks.
