Download or read book The Real and the Romantic written by Frances Spalding and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2022-07-07 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 21st century has seen a surge of interest in English art of the interwar years. Women artists, such as Winifred Knights, Frances Hodgkins and Evelyn Dunbar, have come to the fore, while familiar names Paul Nash, Eric Ravilious and Stanley Spencer have reached new audiences. High-profile exhibitions have attracted recordbreaking visitor numbers and challenged received opinion. In The Real and the Romantic, Frances Spalding, one of Britains leading art historians and critics, takes a fresh and timely look at this rich period in English art. The devastation of the First World War left the art world decentred and directionless. This book is about its recovery. Spalding explores how exciting new ideas co-existed with a desire for continuity and a renewed interest in the past. We see the challenge to English artists represented by Cézanne and Picasso, and the role played by museums and galleries in this period. Women artists, writers and curators contributed to the emergence of a new avant-garde. The English landscape was revisited in modern terms. The 1930s marked a high point in the history of modernism in Britain, but the mood darkened with the prospect of a return to war. The former advance towards abstraction and internationalism was replaced by a renewed concern with history, place, memory and a sense of belonging. Native traditions were revived in modern terms but in ways that also let in the past. Surrealism further disturbed the ascetic purity of high modernism and fed into the British love of the strange. Throughout these years, the pursuit of the real was set against, and sometimes merged with, an inclination towards the romantic, as English artists sought to respond to their subjects and their times.

Book The Spectacular Art of Jean L on G r me 1824 1904

Download or read book The Spectacular Art of Jean L on G r me 1824 1904 written by Jean Léon Gérôme and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gérôme was one of the most famous artists of his day, yet throughout his career he was the object of polemical debate and harsh criticism. Long stigmatized as the embodiment of sterile academicism, he is now considered to be one of the greatest painters of the nineteenth century. Gérôme's interest in Antiquity, his theatrical approach to history painting, and his complex relationships with the Orient and with the new medium of photography all contributed to his highly inventive imagery. Acquired by American collectors at an early date, Gérôme's oeuvre fired the new world's historical imagination and even inspired its favorite medium, the movies. This catalogue traces Gérôme's unique career and features his major works--from history paintings to polychrome sculptures--thereby casting the nineteenth century in a new light."--Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: Camden Town, in north-west London, gave its name to a style of painting and to a society of artists - the Camden Town Group - which held three exhibitions in 1911 and 1912. Both the style and the idea of creating an exhibiting society were formed by the interchange of ideas and influences at 19 Fitzroy Street, where in 1907 Walter Sickert first organized a number of painters, the Fitzroy Street Group, to contribute jointly to the rent of a studio. The style encompassed paintings domestic in scale, unpretentious in subject matter, informal and lively in execution. Its favourite themes included humble models, nude or clothed, in shabby bed-sitters; domestic still lives; London townscapes and landscapes studied on visits to the country and abroad.Sickert's own sombre paintings, in particular the Camden Town Murder series, have come to represent the group's oeuvre but, in this beautifully illustrated book, Wendy Baron explores the range of work created through and beyond the heyday of Camden Town painting by his younger colleagues, in particular Spencer Gore, Harold Gilman, Charles Ginner, Robert Bevan and Malcolm Drummond. She traces not only the history of the Camden Town Group but also how its disintegration and reabsorption by the Fitzroy Street Group spawned the London Group in 1913. Her account gives substance and context to the rival societies, conflicting allegiances and changing priorities of painters before the outbreak of war in 1914.This fascinating and scholarly book by the leading expert on the period contains the first full catalogues of publicly owned paintings by Walter Bayes, Bevan, Drummond, Gilman, Ginner, Gore, J.B. Manson, J.D.Innes, Maxwell Gordon Lightfoot and William Ratcliffe.Perfect Moderns is a revised edition, with new research, of Wendy Baron's much acclaimed The Camden Town Group published in 1979.
