Download or read book The Diatom World written by Joseph Seckbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-23 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diatom biology, genomics and ecology are becoming more relevant to the human species. While there have been recent compilations of some of the applied aspects of diatoms, and the dizzying pace of taxonomic revisions, this new volume bring us up to date on their classification, biology and ecology, as well as covering the topics of genomics and applied uses. In this collection, some of the leaders in diatom research present either new information or summarize recent research efforts on a wide range of topics, including the tree of life of diatoms, their classifications, the wide habitats and ecological spectra the group exploits, as well as the beauty of their form. This volume celebrates the diversity, emerging areas of research and fascinating ecology of the diatoms bringing this group of world-renown and emerging research leaders together. 'The Diatom World' will foster greater appreciation and research contributions on this incredibly diverse and fascinating group of organisms.
Download or read book Diatoms of Montana and Western North America written by Loren L. Bahls and published by . This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated and illustrated checklist updates and expands the one published over ten years ago (Bahls 2009). The atlas section presents images of voucher specimens and the catalog of taxa includes information on habitats, ecology and distribution of each taxon. This work is intended as a guide to the Montana Diatom Collection (MDC) with hope that it will encourage use of the collection to advance our knowledge of diatoms in North America. Each of the images in the atlas is linked to a specific locality, sample and slide in the MDC. The MDC is the source of materials that were used to describe a new genus (Kurtkrammeria), about 100 new species and combinations, and over 300 taxa in the Diatoms of North America online flora (diatoms.org). It is also the source of materials for about 50 research papers and a larger number of water quality assessment reports prepared for the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and other agencies. I dedicate this work to future generations of people who are passionate about diatoms and the diversity of life.In addition to the annotated catalog and atlas of images, this volume also includes a list of research papers that are based on samples in the MDC, tables showing the location of type materials in the MDC, and a table of abundance-weighted mean values for conductivity, pH, temperature, total nitrogen and total phosphorus of 337 common species that are addressed in this volume.Volume 1 includes 840 taxa in 81 genera among the centrics (Coscinodiscophyceae), araphids (Fragilariophyceae) and monoraphids (e.g., Achnanthidium, Cocconeis), Eunotiales (e.g., Eunotia, Peronia) and selected genera of Cymbellales and Naviculales (e.g., Amphora, Cymbella, Navicula, Stauroneis). Volume 2 will include the remaining genera of biraphid pennate diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) including those in the Bacillariales, Rhopalodiales, and Surirellales.

Download or read book Diatoms and the Continuing Relevance of Morphology to Studies on Taxonomy Systematics and Biogeography written by Jakub Witkowski and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-12 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of 13 papers in this volume of Nova Hedwigia Beihefte all focus on aspects of diatom taxonomy and systematics. Amongst these contributions are papers describing new species, both fossil and recent, marine and freshwater; bibliographic matters, necessary for taxonomic priority issues as well as specimen recognition; structural-functional interpretations of the silica parts, studies that are far too infrequent these days; and the results, both illuminating and confounding, of culturing studies. The papers in this volume reflect the work of Patricia Sims peer group and new and emerging leaders in the fields of marine micropaleontology, diatom taxonomy, systematics, biogeography and evolution. The volume is richly illustrated, and new genera and species are proposed, from freshwater and marine environments, fossil and recent and, reflecting Pat Sims' own worldwide perspective. This volume is dedicated to Patricia Sims of the Natural History Museum, London, on the occasion of her 80th birthday (in 2012) and her contributions to diatom research. It is of interest for every scientist working on diatoms and interested in the variety of diatom research.
Download or read book Proceedings of the Sixth Symposium on Recent and Fossil Diatoms Budapest September 1 5 1980 written by Robert Ross and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth Symposium on Recent and Fossil Diatoms was held in Budapest, 1-5 September 1980, and was arranged by the Hungarian Geological Society. During four days of the meeting 71 papers were presented covering almost the whole gamut of topics with which research on diatoms deals. 32 of these papers are included in this volume which contains those devoted to taxonomy, morphology, ecology and biology. They include a few that are concerned with fossil diatoms, but the papers on stratigraphy and paleoecology are appearing in a special number of Acta Geologica Hungaria.
Download or read book Benthic Diatoms from Mediterranean Coasts written by Irene Álvarez-Blanco and published by . This book was released on 2014-01-17 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present a taxonomic study of benthic diatoms collected from coastal rocks in seven northern Mediterranean sites (Italy, Spain, Greece, Turkey) in spring of 2010. An iconographic catalogue of high-quality SEM and light microscopic images, plus detailed taxonomic, nomenclatural and bibliographic information, are provided as a practical reference for further taxonomic and floristic studies on 91 plates. 120 representative diatom taxa, among them several poorly known species, selected from 23 samples, are described in terms of their abundance. The authors provide detailed information on the type material of each diatom species, a list of synonyms, a comparison of morphometric data provided in the literature (in tables) and a series of iconographic SEM-images which illustrate the taxon’s morphological variability, plus an exhaustive list of references. Nomenclature, taxonomy and systematic position of the described taxa are updated. Eight taxa are described as new to science and another seven are nomenclaturally recombined. Eight taxa are new records for the Mediterranean Sea and for five taxa Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) images are presented for the first time. An exhaustive reference list and indices of taxa conclude this volume and make it a valuable source of information for biologists working on benthic diatoms in general, not only of the Mediterranean region.
Download or read book Diatoms of the United States Exclusive of Alaska and Hawaii Volume 1 written by Ruth Patrick and published by . This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This systematic treatment of the diatoms of the U.S. is written for the use of all those concerned with the multitude of kinds & the fascinating diversity of this very large & important group of algae of our fresh waters. This volume represents the first part of a two part systematic treatment of the freshwater diatom flora of continental U.S. exclusive of Alaska. Besides those taxa found in fresh water, a few taxa found in estuaries of rivers & belonging to genera that commonly occur in fresh water are included. No strictly fossil species are included; however, many of the species embraced are found in recent fossil material. Although this book is concerned with the U.S., it should be helpful to the students of diatom floras in Mexico, Canada, & other areas. Illustrations.
Download or read book Freshwater Diatoms from Ile de la Possession Crozet Archipelago Subantarctica written by Bart Van de Vijver and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The freshwater and terrestrial diatom composition of the Subantarctic island Ile de la Possession is investigated in detail. The island is part of the Crozet Archipelago, situated in the southern Indian Ocean. A total of 220 diatom taxa, belonging to 44 genera have been identified after surveying more than 500 samples, taken from all over the island. The most diverse genera are Pirmularia (41 taxa), Nitzschia (19 taxa), Psammothidium (13 taxa) and Diadesmis (11 taxa). Detailed SEM analysis of all observed taxa resulted in the description of several new species and varieties, especially in the genera Diadesmis and Pinnularia, whereas several others need further observations to be described later on as new taxa. In addition, the taxonomy of the so-called Subantarctic taxa has been thoroughly revised based on the most recent insights. All taxa are morphologically and ecologically characterized and elaborately documented with both LM and SEM micrographs.

Download or read book Diatoms in the Wetlands of Southern Iraq written by Adil Y. Al-Handal and published by . This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors document the diatom species composition and ecology in the two major water impoundments of Southern Iraq, the Mesopotamian Marshes and Shatt Al-Arab River. Based on light and scanning electron microscopy investigations, 293 taxa are documented, including the description of three new species. The taxa treated herein were collected from a variety of habitats over a period of 15 years. Diatom assemblages consist of a mixture of freshwater, brackish water and marine taxa. Many diatom taxa that have disappeared in recent years are also documented in this volume. One reason for their disappearance is the high salinization of the Mesopotamian Marshes and Shatt Al-Arab River areas resulting from extremely low freshwater discharge from Euphrates and Tigris Rivers which allowed the seawater front to reach these regions. Species belonging to previously recorded genera such as Eunotia and Diatoma are no longer present in this area. Therefore, this work also is a documentary record of the diatom flora of the wetlands of Southern Iraq during the past 15 years and not only provides an insight into the present state of research but preserves records and findings from taxa no longer present in Southern Iraq, due to human driven ecological impacts.
