Download or read book King Lehr and the Gilded Age written by Elizabeth Drexel Lehr and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-03 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HARRY SYMES LEHR was born in 1869 into a family that was neither wealthy nor socially prominent. His natural gift for entertaining and his penchant for hobnobbing with the very rich earned him entry to the powerful circle of the New York and Newport social elite, where Harry clowned his way to a position of prominence. One of his admirers and patrons, Mrs. Stuyvesant Fish, introduced him to a young widow, Elizabeth Wharton Drexel. Elizabeth was smitten with young Harry, his elegant dress, and outrageous behavior. They were soon married. But King Lehr had a secret—he was not what he seemed. On their wedding night he cruelly dictated the rules of their strange relationship to his new bride. For twenty-three years, Mrs. Lehr protected his secret and remained in a loveless and abusive marriage. After Harry’s death Elizabeth remarried, to the Baron Decies. Lady Decies wrote down her secret story in 1938, incorporating Harry’s most intimate diaries, and told all in this scandalous tale of power, desire, and deception.

Book excerpt: At the end of the 19th century, a group of young Glasgow-based painters established an international reputation for realism and plein-air landscape painting. Led by James Guthrie, John Lavery, Arthur Melville, George Henry, and E. A. Hornel, the Glasgow Boys, as they came to be known, shared an enthusiasm for strong, fresh colors, naturalistic subject matter, and a willingness to travel outside Scotland for subjects and settings. Their enthusiasm for naturalism was equaled only by their dislike of the Scottish arts establishment. In this widely acclaimed book, Roger Billcliffe describes not only the work of the individual artists but also their rejection by local collectors and officialdom before European success caused their work to become much in demand. First published 20 years ago, the book rekindled interest in the group and their work. Now redesigned with more than 200 illustrations in color, it introduces the collective to a new generation of readers and collectors.

Book An Etymological Dictionary of Modern English Vol 1

Download or read book An Etymological Dictionary of Modern English Vol 1 written by Ernest Weekley and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The compiler of this dictionary of word and phrase origins and history was not only a linguist and a philologist but also a man of culture and wit. When he turned his attention, therefore, to the creation of an etymological dictionary for both specialists and non-specialists, the result was easily the finest such work ever prepared. Weekley's Dictionary is a work of thorough scholarship. It contains one of the largest lists of words and phrases to be found in any singly etymological dictionary — and considerably more material than in the standard concise edition, with fuller quotes and historical discussions. Included are most of the more common words used in English as well as slang, archaic words, such formulas as "I. O. U.," made-up words (such as Carroll's "Jabberwock"), words coined from proper nouns, and so on. In each case, roots in Anglo-Saxon, Old Norse, Greek or Latin, Old and modern French, Anglo-Indian, etc., are identified; in hundreds of cases, especially odd or amusing listings, earliest known usage is mentioned and sense is indicated in quotations from Dickens, Shakespeare, Chaucer, "Piers Plowman," Defoe, O. Henry, Spenser, Byron, Kipling, and so on, and from contemporary newspapers, translations of the Bible, and dozens of foreign-language authors.

Book A Remarkable Mother

Download or read book A Remarkable Mother written by Jimmy Carter and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Remarkable Mother is President Carter's loving, admiring, wry homage to Miss Lillian Carter, who championed the underdog always, even when her son was president. A registered nurse, pecan grower, university housemother, Peace Corps volunteer, public speaker, and renowned raconteur, Miss Lillian ignored the mores and prejudices of the racially segregated South of the Great Depression years. She was an avid supporter of the Brooklyn Dodgers (because she happened to attend the first major league baseball game in which Jackie Robinson, from Cairo, Georgia, played), was a favored guest on television talk shows (usually able to "steal the microphone" from hosts such as Johnny Carson and Walter Cronkite), and an important role model for the nation. Jimmy Carter's mother emerges from this portrait as redoubtable, generous, and forward-looking. He ascribes to her the inspiration for his own life's work of commitment and faith.

Book excerpt: Completing the action adventure, western, murder mystery begun in The Trail of the Snake Volume I, The Trail of the Snake Volume II includes Part III ...hath regarded my helpless estate... andPart IV Even so, it is well... And should be read only after reading Volume I. Woven through with all the elements of life-- family relationships, friendships, rivalries, romance, politics, religion and more--the plot twists and turns like the trail of a snake. It's a ride through Hell, as friends appear to be enemies, and enemies appear to be friends, making it tough to do what needs doing, or even to figure out what it is that needs doing. The Trail of the Snake is a work of fiction. Plot lines and characters were developed by the author and should not be construed as real or confused with any actual incidents or individuals, living or dead. All locations cited and products named are based on historical records, but are used in a fictional manner and may have been altered to better serve the storyline. This four-part series, published in two volumes, is set in the 1880s, when people made their own music, often singing as they rode, worked or relaxed. All songs used in the text were sung in this period, during which traveling evangelists held lively camp meetings, and the production and distribution of gospel songs supported prolific songwriters and publishing houses. Scripture quotations are from the King James Version, used most commonly at that time. The horses described are inspired by horses the author has known, with names and details altered.Scenic photographs are from the Norris A. McKeeth collection. Cover art incorporates a historical map from 1882, archived in the Idaho State Historical Library in Boise, Idaho.

Acquired after an intense auction among every major publisher, this woman who became an unwilling celebrity captured the hearts of everyone when she was revealed in the movie as the creative force behind the throne at Vogue. Having grown up on a backwater island in Wales, she came to London just in time to be discovered as a dazzling model by the famous Norman Parkinson, then went on to shape the pages at Vogue for 19 years where she worked as Creative Director with many luminaries including the young Wintour.
