When more than one designation occurs, as for example, Sebastiano del Pionrbo, the name to be looked for in the catalogue may be found by referring to the number in the Index list, page 8, corresponding with the number of the picture. The same hat may be consulted, if the name of the master on the picture-frame should not be easily legible. The plan of the catalogue is historical, as well as descriptive. Biographical notices of the several painters precede, in most cases, the descriptions of their works: the history, as far as known, of each picture is also given; together with its dimensions, the material on which it is executed, and other details which may sometimes serve to identify it. Among the sources of information which have reference to the history of the art, the opinions of eminent critics on the merits of particular masters, and of remarkable works, have not been overlooked. A certain degree of historical knowledge, as regards both the art itself and its criticism, is perhaps indispensable for the due appreciation of some works; the merit of which, depending on the time and circumstances of their production, is in a great measure relative. Where the signature of such artist is not on the picture there can be no certainty of its authenticity unless there is direct evidence of some one who has seen it painted and has also com municated such evidence to people who have lived after him and even where the name is so found on the picture it is possible that it may have been placed there by some one other than the artist, and fraudulently. Then, again, there are many painters who never sign a picture, and we are left to the opin ion of the so-called expert, whose testimony is, to say the least, doubtful. There fore while I have taken the best evidence at hand for the authentication of my pictures, it must not be understood that I am sure that the names attached to them are the correct ones. Where I have had grave doubts myself I have so designated, and only placed the name where I flaw felt it was quite certain to. Never before or since has the Art of Living attained to a like perfection, never such attention been given to the acces sories of life. To please was almost the sole preoccupation; to beautify, to render more agreeable the daily life of a society devoted to pleasure, past masters in the art of living, was the aim alike of painter, draughtsman, or engraver of each and every artist who could contribute by his skill to the perfec tion of the tout ensemble. It is an art unparalleled at any epoch, and it is not an Overstatement to say that there exist no prints more decorative than those of the French School of the Eighteenth Century.
