At the time when Dr. Bernard compiled his laborious Catalogue of MSS., as they then existed in the different libraries in England and Ireland, in All Souls College there were found only fifty volumes; since that period, however, their number has increased to a very considerable extent; and the reader will find in the following pages a description of nearly three hundred books, embracing more than three hundred and twenty volumes, in which is contained much of interest and of importance. Book Spaces for Reading in Later Medieval England

Download or read book Spaces for Reading in Later Medieval England written by Mary C. Flannery and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are living in an age in which the relationship between reading and space is evolving swiftly. Cutting-edge technologies and developments in the publication and consumption of literature continue to uncover new physical, electronic, and virtual contexts in which reading can take place. In comparison with the accessibility that has accompanied these developments, the medieval reading experience may initially seem limited and restrictive, available only to a literate few or to their listeners; yet attention to the spaces in which medieval reading habits can be traced reveals a far more vibrant picture in which different kinds of spaces provided opportunities for a wide range of interactions with and contributions to the texts being read. Drawing on a rich variety of material, this collection of essays demonstrates that the spaces in which reading took place (or in which reading could take place) in later medieval England directly influenced how and why reading happened.

Book Chaucer s Early Modern Readers

Download or read book Chaucer s Early Modern Readers written by Devani Singh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-22 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first extended study of the reception of Chaucer's medieval manuscripts in the early modern period, this book focuses chiefly on fifteenth-century manuscripts and discusses how these volumes were read, used, valued, and transformed in an age of the poet's prominence in print. Each chapter argues that patterns in the material interventions made by readers in their manuscripts - correcting, completing, supplementing, and authorising - reflect conventions which circulated in print, and convey prevailing preoccupations about Chaucer in the period: the antiquity and accuracy of his words, the completeness of individual texts and of the canon, and the figure of the author himself. This unexpected and compelling evidence of the interactions between fifteenth-century manuscripts and their early modern analogues asserts print's role in sustaining manuscript culture and thus offers fresh scholarly perspectives to medievalists, early modernists, and historians of the book. This title is also available as open access on Cambridge Core.
