Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The legacy of Robert Mapplethorpe (1946 –1989) is rich and complicated, triggering controversy, polarizing critics, and providing inspiration for many artists who followed him. Mapplethorpe, one of the most influential figures of his time, today stands as an example to emerging photographers who continue to experiment with the boundaries and concepts of the beautiful. Robert Mapplethorpe: The Photographs offers a timely and rewarding examination of his oeuvre and influence. Drawing from the extraordinary collection jointly acquired in 2011 by the J. Paul Getty Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, as well as the Mapplethorpe Archive housed at the Getty Research Institute, the authors were given the unique opportunity to explore new resources and present fresh perspectives. The result is a fascinating introduction to Mapplethorpe’s career and legacy, accompanied by a rich selection of illustrations covering the remarkable range of his photographic work. All of these beautifully integrated elements contribute to what promises to become an essential point of access to Mapplethorpe’s work and practice. This publication is issued on the occasion of the exhibition Robert Mapplethorpe: The Perfect Mediumon view at both the J. Paul Getty Museum and at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art from March 15 and March 20, respectively, through July 31, 2016; at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal from September 10, 2016, through January 15, 2017; and at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, from October 28, 2017, through February 4, 2018.

Book Art and Love in Renaissance Italy

Download or read book Art and Love in Renaissance Italy written by Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.) and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 2008 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Many famous artworks of the Italian Renaissance were made to celebrate love, marriage, and family. They were the pinnacles of a tradition, dating from early in the era, of commemorating betrothals, marriages, and the birth of children by commissioning extraordinary objects - maiolica, glassware, jewels, textiles, paintings - that were often also exchanged as gifts. This volume is the first comprehensive survey of artworks arising from Renaissance rituals of love and marriage and makes a major contribution to our understanding of Renaissance art in its broader cultural context. The impressive range of works gathered in these pages extends from birth trays painted in the early fifteenth century to large canvases on mythological themes that Titian painted in the mid-1500s. Each work of art would have been recognized by contemporary viewers for its prescribed function within the private, domestic domain."--BOOK JACKET.

Book The Last Picture Show

Download or read book The Last Picture Show written by Douglas Fogle and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photography has become an increasingly pervasive medium of choice in contemporary art practice and is even employed at times by artists who do not necessarily consider themselves to be photographers. How did this come to be? The Last Picture Show will address the emergence of this phenomenon of artists using photography by tracing the development of conceptual trends in postwar photographic practice from its first glimmerings in the 60s in the work of artists such as Bernd & Hilla Becher, Ed Ruscha and Bruce Nauman, to its rise to art-world prominence in the work of the artists of the late 70s and early 80s including Sherrie Levine, Richard Prince and Cindy Sherman. Intended as a major genealogy of the rise of a still-powerful and evolving photographic practice by artists, the checklist will include a wide array of works examining a range of issues: performativity and photographic practice; portraiture and cultural identity; the formal and social architectonics of the built environment; societal and individual interventions in the landscape; photography's relationship to sculpture and painting; the visual mediation of meaning in popular culture; and the poetic and conceptual investigation of visual non-sequiturs, disjunctions and humorous absurdities. Bringing together a newly commissioned body of scholarship with reprints of important historical texts, The Last Picture Show seeks to define the legacy that has produced a rich body of photographic practice in the art world today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take a tour of Meiji-era Japan through these exquisitely crafted hand-colored photographs Photography found its way to Japan in the second half of the 19th century, toward the close of the Edo period and the beginning of the Meiji era, during which the new technology of cameras and film development mingled with the traditional skills of local Japanese painters. These artists were able to color photographic prints by hand, meticulously applying paint to the tiniest of surfaces in order to accurately convey the richness of the environments they captured. The results of this highly disciplined practice were exquisite hand-colored albumen prints virtually indistinguishable from actual color photography. Often purchased in albums as souvenirs by Western tourists, these photographs frequently depicted beautiful landscapes, dynamic architecture and various Japanese citizens in traditional garb. Because the largest market for these photographs was in Yokohama, a city south of Tokyo, the technical and aesthetic style became known as the "School of Yokohama." Clearly informed by artistic movements of the time and echoing the work of greats such as Utamaro and Hokusai, these photographs are as much a demonstration of their creators' skill as they are a record of everyday life in 19th-century Japan. This volume presents a wide survey of these now-obscure masterpieces, each infused with both a sense of nostalgia and an undeniable liveliness.
