Download or read book Letters of Frances Hodgkins written by Frances Hodgkins and published by Auckland University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters of Frances Hodgkins is a generous selection of letters written by New Zealand's most internationally well-known artist. It shows that Hodgkins deserves not only her considerable reputation as a painter, but also that of a brilliant and engaging writer. The letters reveal Hodgkins' changing moods, impressions and fortunes and provide vivid sketches of the people and landscapes she came across. Spanning from colonial Dunedin to her travels across Europe and North Africa, the letters continue through her final flowering in her 60s and 70s. Linda Gill's careful scholarship and sensitive appreciation of Hodgkins' talents and personality make her introduction and notes the perfect framework for the artist's own words. A chronology, an in-depth bibliography and an index of letter recipients complement the work. Extensively illustrated, with eight pages of color reproductions of Hodgkins' paintings, Letters of Frances Hodgkins is central to understanding Hodgkins as artist and woman.

Download or read book Manchester s First Modernist written by Karl Hagedorn and published by Australian Geographic. This book was released on 1994 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Hagedorn was known through his work in public collections such as the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, the Manchester City Art Gallery and the Whitworth Art Gallery to be a conventional landscape watercolourist who had played no real part in the continual innovation and originality which the twentieth century demands. In 1990 the Whitworth acquired a painting by Hagedorn which revealed that, in 1913, his ambitions were towards breaking conventions rather than consolidating them and showed his awarenessof the most advanced art of the day. This catalogue rediscovers his work from the early teens and twenties which had completely disappeared from public view.

Download or read book Handbook of Modern British Painting and Printmaking 1900 1990 written by Alan Windsor and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Modern British Painting and Printmaking 1900-1990 has been designed for people who enjoy, study and buy British art. The only portable dictionary-style guide to the life and work of modern British painters and printmakers, the book provides information on some 2,000 artists, as well as entries on schools of art, on museums, galleries and collections, on societies and groups, and critics and patrons who have influenced the development of modern art in Britain. Artists are included if they (at one end of the timescale) had finished their training by 1900, and were truly beginning their professional career in the twentieth century, and (at the other end of the timescale) had established themselves professionally on the national scene by 1990. If the artist was foreign born, he or she is included if they resided in Britain, and exhibited or worked here long enough for their presence to be of significance for British art.
